Hey, @NYTGames "steno" is a word. Sadly, Crossplay didn't accept.

Watch: If you're going to make a left turn from the center of five lanes, maybe it's best not to do it right in front of a Virginia State Trooper. It's even better not to then get into a crash. This happened just before midnight on Braddock Road over the Capital Beltway in Fairfax County. No serious injuries reported. Video via CivicViewPro.com. #crash #collision #police #Virginia #VSP
Close call for @ffxfirerescue firefighters in Reston.
Extremely close call for firefighters: (Warning: Video shows a firefighter sustaining injuries.)
In Fairfax County, VA, a utility pole collapsed onto an area where firefighters were working. It happened at a crash scene yesterday in Reston. This important safety footage is being shared in the fire service community. The outcome could have been far worse. Below are the details published yesterday by @ffxfirerescue.
On 8/25 11:31am #FCFRD responded to 2 vehicle crash at Bracknell Dr & Baron Cameron Ave in Reston w/ 1 car into pole. While on scene a passing truck caught hanging electrical wires causing pole to collapse on ambulance. 1 civilian & 1 FF transported non-life-threatening injuries.

Lucky this didn't blow up. It's dangerous out there peeps.
Wrong way driver causes large gas leak: CivicViewPro.com video shows that the driver who hit the 12-inch gas line in Fairfax County this morning was on the wrong side of the road after passing Burke Center Parkway on Ox Road. The driver has non-life-threatening injuries. The significant leak caused the evacuation of an elementary school and shopping center. Traffic on Ox Road remains shut. @ffxfirerescue and @FairfaxCountyPD are handling. It's unclear why the person was on the wrong side of the road. #gasleak #wrongwaydriver #crash #fairfaxva @ffxnow @charlienbc @NFTC_News @matthewyoung31 @CordellTraffic @HCBright10

Tomorrow marks 40 years since the death of Len Bias – a tragedy that stunned the sports world and the legion of fans who followed the young basketball star. It was, without a doubt, one of the most heartbreaking and troubling days in local sports history.
As a reporter, you accept that your work will occasionally make people angry. But on June 19, 1986, less than a year into my TV news career, I seemed to piss off an entire region by reporting the truth. NEW: A family of geese, walking instead of flying, clogged I-66 westbound for more than an hour this afternoon. A @MetroTransitPD K-9 officer protected them by himself for about 45 minutes. After @VSPPIO and @ArlingtonVaPD joined in, there appeared to be a failed effort to guide them off at the Sycamore Street exit. A second appearance of the police K-9 apparently then spooked mom and dad. From the @VaDOTNOVA/ SafetyVid.org video it appears that, in the end, the kids and parents became separated. Not the happiest of endings, but not the worst. @ARLnowDOTcom @charlienbc @matthewyoung31 @NFTC_News @CordellTraffic @AdamTuss @HCBright10 @HillaryHowardDC @wmata @wmataGM @DCNewsNow #police #geese #birds #Virginia #vatraffic #traffic

What a beautiful night at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium. It was an honor to attend the 2026 @dcfireems Annual Awards Ceremony and Dinner along with @hillaryhowarddc. @mauro_amy, the @dcfireemsfound, @FD_Observer, and the department made it a memorable night. Congratulations to all who were recognized for their outstanding and often heroic work. Special shout out to the Eastern High School Choir and those who shot, edited, and produced the great videos.
Image one shows the family of Technician Stephen Shipp Jr., who died almost a year ago of occupational cancer. It was an enormously moving speech by his wife, Sonia, as they accepted the Benjamin C. Grenup Memorial Recognition.
There were multiple awards surrounding the response to last year's Potomac River Mid-Air Collision (image 2), including the Fire Boat receiving the Company of the Year award. Some of the families of those who died in the crash were on stage applauding the large group of firefighters who responded on that awful night.
Image 3 shows an extremely grateful father with a wonderful speech thanking the firefighters who rescued two of his children. They were trapped in the basement during a fire at 4012 14th Street NW. His speech was in Spanish, but even before the translation, you could tell his words were from the heart. Another beautiful moment.
The last picture is from a video honoring the work of various employees of the year. Of course, I must acknowledge and congratulate my friend of 45 years, Vito Maggiolo. That's a picture of Vito with his fellow fire buff, Elliot Goodman. Vito, who was a decades-long CNN veteran (he was there at the start of the network), is retiring from this second career in a little more than a month. I know Vito would expect my snarky self to say, "It's the end of an error." It really is the end of an important chapter in sharing the story of DC Fire & EMS. You served them well, Vito, but Chief Greg Dean made one big mistake when he hired you. The chief could have made the city some money. He just didn't realize that Vito would have paid them to get that job.
Good work by emcees @brianmitchell, Fred Smoot, @JenniferHomendy, and @AimeeCho4. #firefighters #EMS
