An interesting Ravana, with what looks like a Kangaroo atop his central head. Made of wooden lacquerware. Seen in the handicraft museum within the Deendayal Hasthkala Sankul, #Varanasi. #Dussehra

I could go back to #Hampi fifty times and find something new every time. There are a thousand places where one could sit and never want to come out again.

#Sualkuchi also has the amazing Sidheswar Devalaya, the which may have originally been built in the 10th - 11th century CE. Some of the icons currently installed in niches around the temple may date to that period. #Assam
An Assamese line on the village gate of Sualkuchi calls the village the place where dharma and karma meet. As you enter the village, you understand why. Sualkuchi is famous for its silk weaving. Every home in Sualkuchi reverberates with the sound of the handloom. But that’s not Sualkuchi’s only claim to fame. Tucked in one of the lanes, lies the Hathi Satra, a 300 year old institution. The outer walls of the Namghar feature 250 year old wooden carvings of the Ramayana on one side and the story of Krishna on the other. Save this for your next Assam trip. Now that I have completed my pandal hopping for this year, time to talk about a sea of temples in West Bengal, a state that has much more to see beyond the Durga Puja pandals of Kolkata, in my latest for @moneycontrolcom tinyurl.com/wbjourney

Had an interesting time doing this story for TOI's Bhopal edition. On how museums were truly gateways to exploring a region and much more could be done to make them come alive, especially for younger audiences.

One of India's tallest minarets is the obscure Lanka Minar, Kalpi, #Jalaun district of UP. Amidst depictions of long snakes, human figures standing, sitting & lying down, the highlight is a carving of Ravana on the minar itself. Built in the mid 19th century.

Sharing a blast from the past...20 years ago to the day, took some pictures of ceiling patterns from within Akbar's tomb at #Sikandra. Probably my first use of a digital camera.

Outstanding step! Ancient temples can survive and locals will find relevance only if they are in worship again. Keeping them moth balled will only ensure their ruin.
On the sacred night of Amavasya, 10 Oct 2026, Vimal (Chairman, ReclaimTemples) along with others, performed and restarted the Yogini worship at the ancient Chausath Yogini Mandir, Mitaoli, Madhya Pradesh. On the auspicious day and hour, a long-interrupted tradition was lit again. The worship of the Yoginis and their temples, will be revived across Bharat. Follow for updates. #ReclaimTemples

Amidst ancient walls and overgrown ruins, the eternal spirit of Maa Durga shines bright. Some traditions may fade with time, but faith, devotion, and the festive spirit of Durga Puja live on forever. 🪔🌺🙏

Only in #Bundelkhand can an explorer wander off the road to a dirt track & spot an ancient structure in the middle of fields. This temple lies close to the village of Kariyari, #Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh. May have been built by the Chandella rulers with a water body nearby

Many journeys begin in tiny places. Reading abt the career of Field Marshal Frederick Roberts is akin to reading a history of the British Empire in the late 19th century. He was a born soldier, one of the empire-builders on whose shoulders Britain controlled much of the planet.

From the Indian Mutiny to wars in Afghanistan, Abyssinia and against the Boers (South Africa), his story is both glorious as well as blood-stained, depending on where one is viewing it from.

And it is a story that began in a tiny village called Khudaganj, which now finds itself in Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh. A barely-legible inscription on a stone tablet marks the spot where he, as a young officer, won a Victoria Cross in January 1858.
