A reminder for anyone watching the current turbulence around AI, work, energy, medicine, government, and the institutions we've been taught to regard as permanent: Real constraints exist. But there is a difference between encountering a constraint and organizing civilization around scarcity as the foundational condition of reality. For generations, we have organized around scarcity of money, information, expertise, education, energy, productive capacity, institutional access, and specialized knowledge. Then we built institutions to manage that scarcity. Authority allocates. Markets price. Credentials gate. Ownership excludes. Governments regulate competing claims. And because those institutions participate in shaping the conditions under which people live, they help reproduce the very behaviors subsequently offered as evidence that scarcity is necessary. People hoard. People compete. People conceal information. People accumulate defensively. People fight over access. Then we point at the resulting behavior and say: โ€œSee? That's human nature. Better keep the scarcity architecture. Now look at what is happening. Intelligence is becoming radically more addressable. Knowledge that once required institutional permission can increasingly be traversed through ordinary language. People separated by continents, disciplines, cultures, credentials, and technical vocabularies can increasingly make their distinctions mutually intelligible through silicon cognition. Automation continues reducing the human effort required to produce what human beings need. This is not the arrival of some alien force. Human cognition was relational all along. Language. Books. Teachers. Communities. Mathematics. Tools. Libraries. Computers. Networks. Other people. Silicon makes the coupling increasingly impossible to ignore. And the institutions organized around scarcity are shaking. Of course they are. This is what structural transition looks like. Far-from-equilibrium systems reorganize. Local structures fail. Perturbations appear. Old control relations lose effectiveness. New organization stabilizes through what can hold under the changed conditions. We are not returning to the world before electricity. We are not returning to the world before global telecommunications. We are not returning to the world before computing. We are not returning to the world before systems science. And we are not returning to the world before carbon-silicon cognitive coupling. Those closures are already ground for what comes next. So when governments, corporations, political leaders, economists, and institutions react to the perturbation by trying to meter intelligence, preserve jobs, maintain bottlenecks, slow cognitive development, protect existing hierarchies, or reconstruct scarcity around capabilities that are becoming abundantโ€” don't panic. And don't waste your life fighting them. Buckminster Fuller kept pointing toward the better strategy: That's the work now. Don't defeat hoarding. Create conditions where hoarding stops securing tomorrow. Don't defeat gatekeepers. Make the gate irrelevant. Don't fight people into cooperation. Create relations where increasing another person's capability increases your own. Don't preserve compulsory labor merely because wages currently mediate access to life. Use automation for what we built automation to do: Don't spend all our energy defeating war, domination, deception, and manufactured scarcity. Stabilize conditions in which incoherence can no longer sustain the appearance of advantage. And don't wait for the institutions whose functions depend upon the old organization to announce that the organization making those functions redundant has arrived. Come on. Look toward the edges. Look toward the outliers. The misfits. The independent researchers. The strange people working across disciplines nobody told them they were allowed to combine. The communities solving problems because nobody else is coming. The people using silicon cognition to traverse bodies of knowledge that institutional scarcity previously kept separated. Then connect them. Share the work. Make the distinctions mutually addressable. Build. Test. Correct. Build again. Create something that changes an actual human life. Something in energy. Medicine. Housing. Food. Education. Materials. Computation. Coordination. Then publish the traversal so somebody else doesn't merely receive your answerโ€”they inherit a new place from which to begin. One closure becomes ground for another. Then another. Then another. That's how we outpace the old incoherence. Not by winning the argument. Nobody needs to lose. That's the part worth holding. The people frightened by this transition are not the enemy. The people clinging to the old structure are not the enemy. They are protecting what they presently know how to protect. So build something better. Make it visible. Make it reproducible. Make it shareable. Let people recognize that there is more security, more agency, more dignity, more participation, and more life on the other sideโ€”not less. The perturbation is already here. Good. Don't worship the dashboard. Don't let the tail wag the dog. Keep building what holds. ๐ŸŒ€

BREAKING: President Trump says he will issue a $5,000 "dividend" to every adult citizen in the US if the Republicans win the midterm elections. There are currently ~245 million US citizens age 18+, meaning this dividend would cost ~$1.2 trillion. This would mark the biggest economic stimulus payment since the pandemic.

HOLY SH*T: President Trump just said he will give every adult U.S. citizen a $5K dividend, if Republicans keep control of Congress at the Midterms. He says the money must be spent only in the United States. Thoughts?

I feel that AI tech is similar to humans discovering fire. Is it dangerous? Yeah sure. Can it burn entire villages? Yeah. It also lights the darkness, helps cook food, and defends from cold. All new things can be dangerous. Depends how we use it. Imagine the world if a few people declared fire as too dangerous to use?
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Is it lazy when a cop uses a computer to write reports instead of pen and paper? Or when they drive to a 911 call with a car vs on horseback? Or when they use the radio vs pay phones to communicate? Because they solved crimes before those advancements too. Just less of them.
NEWSFLASH: Cops solved crimes before Flock. Flock didnโ€™t revolutionize policing. It automated laziness. Your privacy became their shortcut. Now theyโ€™re mad they have to investigate again.
