Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.
Discovered beneath the rubble; bronze from a time of struggle.
The late Bronze Age/Iron Age cauldron from the Sompting Hoard (now displayed in @wtmworthing) was discovered with 17 axes in 1946.

A very large anti-racist crowd in #Brighton. On the A23 entering here, the Patcham Pylons inscription hails guests and then says:
“If friend we greet thee hand and heart. If stranger no longer be. If foe our love shall conquer thee.”
That spirit proven a thousand-fold tonight.

Coin time! Alan found a Roman coin in his first 2 hours of archaeology ever. Great work! Happy Alan. Happy team.
We'd love any coin experts to give us their thoughts on the coin, please.

Apropos of nothing, Clacton is the only British location to have given a name solely to a Palaeolithic technology. It also preserved the world's oldest wooden spear. Dated to 420,000 yrs ago when Britain had multiple cultures & freedom of movement dictated only by sea level rise.

Welcome to all our new followers & those who've stuck with us for a while.
Although Indy is a great example of how not to be an archaeologist, he was, for many, the inspiration to study archaeology.

There’s never not a reason to share this slice of excellence from the inimitable Stewart Lee and the brilliant @ADFofficial, but for some reason it felt particularly apposite today.

A bit of ancient etymology:
Pliny the Elder (NH 16.95) writes that druids valued oak trees so highly that 'druid' probably came from the Greek for 'oak', drûs.
He wasn't far off! 'Druid' is today derived from Celtic *dru-wid- 'oak-knowing' (or metaphorically 'strong-knowing').

Sipping my morning coffee ☕️ and thinking about these marvellous Minoan cups!
They look so modern it’s incredible to think they were created by Bronze Age potters about 3,800 years ago!
This type of Minoan pottery is known as Kamares Ware. Kamares Ware vessels are said to have been used in palace banquets, so rather than coffee, they may have been used for consumption of alcohol. Analysis of organic residues from ancient Cretan pottery have detected resin-flavoured wine.

The vast majority of metal detectorists we work with are very responsible & committed to working with @findsorguk to record finds & advance knowledge.
However, despite lots of advice from us & National Council for Metal Detecting, some seem determined to destroy archaeology

Yes! The right to wild camp on Dartmoor common land has been restored 🎉🎉
A right is not the same as permission - glad the judges agreed!
Now to extend this to other national parks in England & Wales
