Dear Alhaji Atiku,
You can tweet from now till the end of time, it will not change the facts on ground. The fact is that President Tinubu and the APC administration has impacted the Nigerian Police Force and the retired officers positively and more efforts are still ongoing to do even more.
Below are some of the efforts of President Tinubu’s administration to improve the welfare of the active and retired gallant men and women of the Police Force:
1. Commitment to reviewing police salaries and allowances:
The Federal Government established a ministerial and stakeholders' committee to review the remuneration and welfare of serving and retired police personnel.
The review covers:
- Basic salaries and the police salary structure.
- Regular and non-regular allowances.
- Housing and uniform allowances.
- Insurance and other welfare benefits.
- Outstanding pension arrears and death benefits.
- Group Life Insurance liabilities and Group Personal Accident claims.
2. Implementation of the new national minimum wage and consequential salary adjustments:
When the new 70,000 National Minimum Wage was signed in and implemented in 2024, Police officers were among the beneficiaries, while necessary consequential adjustments were also implemented.
3. Improved protection and insurance benefits for officers and their families:
The Nigeria Police Force announced substantial payments to the families and beneficiaries of officers who died in service.
According to the Force's official announcement, additional insurance payment announced was N2.855bn for 1,235 beneficiaries, while the cumulative insurance benefit reported by May 2025 was N23bn for 8,311 beneficiary families
These payments covered outstanding insurance claims associated with several policy years, including 2018/2019, 2021/2022, 2022/2023 and 2023/2024.
4. Development and reconstruction of police barracks:
The NPF reported ongoing efforts to reconstruct dilapidated police barracks and improve officers' living conditions.
The programme included:
- Redevelopment of existing police barracks.
- Plans to provide improved residential accommodation.
- Temporary relocation arrangements for affected occupants.
- Relocation assistance and agreed relocation allowances.
- Payment of normal rent allowances to affected officers during construction.
- Plans to allocate accommodation in the redeveloped facilities to eligible occupants after completion.
5. Establishment of National Police Day:
President Tinubu announced April 7 as National Police Day, and the first major celebration took place in 2025.
The initiative recognises the contributions of police officers, honours fallen personnel and provides a national platform to discuss professionalism, institutional reform and police welfare.
Its significance includes:
- Public recognition of the sacrifices made by serving officers.
- Recognition of officers who have died in the line of duty.
- Greater attention to the working conditions of police personnel.
- An opportunity for government and police leadership to communicate welfare commitments.
Under President Tinubu, Police Officers (Active and Retired) are receiving a better sense of belonging
6. Investment in healthcare and medical services:
The Federal Government has identified accessible healthcare as one of its priorities for improving police welfare.
At the National Police Day celebration on April 7, 2025, President Tinubu stated that the government intended to improve access to healthcare for police personnel and provide better support for their families and that’s very much ongoing
7. Approval of a 20% and 28% pension increase for eligible retirees:
The Federal Government approved pension increases of 20% and 28% for eligible pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).
The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) subsequently reported that the Federal Government had completed the payment of arrears arising from this first pension increment.
