The passing of Aziz Alghashian is very sad and shocking. Less than a month ago, I met Aziz in New York after weeks of online exchanges and years of following his work. I have been telling my colleagues how much of a gentleman he was, how kind, eloquent, and informative he was. I was eager to know him better and work with him more closely.
My thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone who knew him.

For any conventional army, confronting an insurgency engaged in asymmetric warfare is an enormous challenge. The United States itself struggled with this in Iraq and Afghanistan. Saudi Arabia faces the added difficulty of defending a vast territory filled with strategic and economic targets, while the Houthis operate from a largely barren and devastated landscape with relatively few vulnerable assets. This would be a formidable challenge for any military.
