A new PhD started today. She asked for general advice for the first few months. This was my advice:
1. Don’t work evenings or weekends
2. Don’t aim to prove yourself (to me), I’m already convinced of your capacities
3. Go for a walk when things dazzle you (1/3)
For me its time to leave X.
Can I find you on 🦋? Like this message and I will look for you there.
Thanks for all the great interactions 🙏🏻. This account has helped me get through a tough time recovering from a car accident. I wish you great PhD times & Happy supervisors!

If someone could remind me that I’m capable and will indeed finish this godforsaken PhD, that would be great.
Gentle reminder: don’t wait too long with sending a draft to your supervisor(s) for feedback. Getting their feedback in an early stage is more efficient than having to change a lot when you already thought you had almost finished a piece.

I’m curious: do you participate in a PhD programme? And if yes, what does it bring you?

Do your future self (and your supervisor) a favour and KEEP NOTES of your experiments!
Writing up the methods section for a study we started a few years ago... I'd be lost without my notes!

Advice for PhD Candidates:
1. Choose a supportive advisor.
2. Seek sincere connections, not just "networking."
3. Papers open doors; ethics and meaningful connections open the right ones.
4. Stay connected to your initial motivation.
5. Your actions define you, not your title.
What an honor to be invited to share these tips for the junior researchers of @EarliSig1.
And special thanks to my costar, Happy PhD Student @CJMTielemans, and @Niels6434847779 for opening up about their highs and lows of doing a PhD.

Do you prefer a supervisor that agrees with you or a supervisor that disagrees with you?

If you have constructive feedback, it’s not rude to speak up. It's unkind to stay silent.
Honesty is the highest form of flattery. It signals that you respect their ability to handle the truth.
Don't deprive people of the opportunity to learn. Offering ideas is an act of care.
