Understanding dementia requires integrating genetics, the exposome, and biological aging. At the ReDLat2 Annual Meeting (October 19–21, Santiago, Chile), we will explore how genetic susceptibility interacts with environmental and social exposures to shape brain aging and dementia risk. ReDLat2 will focus on developing multimodal aging clocks that integrate genetics, neuroimaging, molecular biomarkers, and exposome data to capture individual differences in brain health and disease. Join us in Santiago. More info soon.

1. CRISPR came from basic research on bacteria.
2. Optogenetics started with a discovery in algae.
3. The GFP protein comes from jellyfish.
The biggest breakthroughs all trace to scientists follow their curiosity. This is one huge reason why we must keep funding basic research!

Congratulations to Brazil, The Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands on achieving major milestones towards eliminating vertical transmission of HIV, bringing us closer to a world where no child is born with HIV.
The new Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS, adopted by UN Member States in June, commits countries to urgently accelerate the elimination of vertical transmission of HIV. The strong progress across the region shows what is possible when political commitment, evidence and partnership translate into action.
These milestones are part of the Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV Plus Initiative, implemented in collaboration with UNAIDS and @UNICEF, and embedded within @PAHOWHO’s Elimination Initiative.

Ok. I’ve spent a whole day celebrating Karl Deisseroth’s very deserved Nobel (with every other brain enthusiast!). Now let’s talk about the brilliance of Dr. Michelle Monje, his wife.
A Stanford physician, neuroscientist and recipient of a MacArthur Genius grant, Michelle has helped pioneer cancer neuroscience, revealing how brain activity can fuel tumor growth and opening new possibilities for treatment.
And I say all this because I’ve been lucky to see her work firsthand and have been awe struck since the moment I met her. What makes Michelle extraordinary is the combination of scientific brilliance and her absolute unwavering commitment to children with devastating brain cancers. She is pushing the science forward because those children and their families cannot afford to wait.
Everybody deserves to know @michelle_monje.
