Speaking out against the #LoanCharge. 100,000 people are being denied their statutory rights because, in HMRC’s “opinion”, they don’t deserve a fair hearing.

More than £1,000 for a single umbrella introduction. As Ashley Olliver leaves the UK umbrella industry, he sits down exclusively with ContractorUK for a tell-all interview. He has seen rogue umbrellas advertise that fee. A compliant margin would struggle to support it. The off-payroll rules, JSL and the Employment Rights Act are driving a shift toward fewer, larger umbrellas. Smaller, well-run firms risk being squeezed out. Umbrella regulation alone will not drive out the cowboys, he says. He departs Parasol on 30 October 2026, after 18 years in the umbrella market, for People 2.0 in the US. contractoruk.com/news/paraso…

Excellent meeting of the Loan Charge and Tax Payer Fairness APPG covering HMRCs behaviour in relation to not only the Loan Charge but also pensions fraud, mistaken ID and VAT fraud. Everyone felt it was a useful and productive meeting with a number of MPs present. More to come..

Finally we have some honesty from @hmtreasury. There are NO convictions of loan scheme promoters. So the reality is that @HMRCgovuk are simply going after individuals & demanding unpayable sums with no appeal leading to bankruptcies, breakdowns & suicides. #LoanChargeScandal

BREAKING NEWS 🔥Today, at 2pm in Westminster, I address the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Loan Charge and Tax Payer Fairness as I hold a deeply distressing national distinction: I am the first known British citizen to be wrongly named and shamed by HMRC on their public list of deliberate tax defaulters - to the tune of £132,711.25. Today, I will give witness testimony on HMRC's toxic culture and the need for major reform. After the event, I will post my speech on my website thechangepress.com #memoir #taxpayerbillofrights #ginoscontraband @journomadeleine @jeffprestridge @willydunn @taxwatch @TheTaxcast @LCAG_2019 @loanchargeAPPG @crimlawuk @TaxReformUK @thelawyermag

1/3 Last night two peers tried to delete the heart of the Hillsborough Law: the offence that makes it a crime for public officials to deliberately mislead the public. They gave no statement saying it was just a probing amendment. It failed. The offence stays in the Bill.

HMRC can now take unpaid tax straight from your bank accounts and Cash ISAs. Debts over £1,000. No court order needed upfront. They leave you £5,000 and give you a visit + 30-day objection window, but the power is real and already restarted. Your money in a bank is not fully yours. Opt out. Maybe Self-custody in Bitcoin.

Many of the stupidest policies come from trying to close loopholes that the govt simply need to accept are better left in existence. The tax on cash interest held in S&S ISAs for example is one of the stupidest, pettiest loophole closures I've ever come across.

The right of substitution is about to get a lot less important. The employment status consultation could damage IR35 defences previously reliant on the importance of this clause. The spur is IWGB v Deliveroo at the Supreme Court in November 2023. This categorisation of all under the same blanket leaves much open for discussion. Andy Chamberlain, head of strategic policy at the Freelancer & Contractor Services Association (FCSA), writes exclusively for ContractorUK on the impact of this potential wide-scale generalisation. Contractors can respond. It closes at 11:55pm on Friday 8 January 2027. contractoruk.com/news/weaken…

Meanwhile the shambolic implementation of the programme continues apace. More than a third of HMRC-approved software for Making Tax Digital (MTD) is not capable of handling end-of-year tax returns. So the self-employed can buy HMRC-approved software which will handle four of the five needed returns but not the fifth. William Holden of tax adviser Blick Rothenberg said the MTD burden was already pushing some to leave the workforce altogether. He added: "MTD is another administration burden for landlords and sole traders that's also eating into profitability. We've had clients saying they'll sell their property rather than deal with yet another headache. It's not what you need in a growing economy."

Almost half of all sole traders want HMRC's Making Tax Digital programme to be ditched, a Centre for Policy Studies survey has revealed. 44% want it scrapped entirely while 14% are prepared for it to go ahead with changes and a minuscule 10% are happy for it to proceed as planned. The Government and HMRC have totally failed to gain the confidence of the self-employed. Forcing the self-employed to file five tax returns each year is an obvious idiocy and it is no wonder that they are upset. 1/2

There needs to be an investigation into who within #HMRC conceived of the controversial #LoanCharge that has caused (at least 10 #LoanChargeSuicides), as well as the way HMRC officials have consistently misled Parliament. Another example of institutional dishonesty in the UK.
