giftarticle.ft.com/giftartic… Insurance claims to test Altman and Amodei liability for ‘rogue’ AI
Meanwhile UK airports are embracing technology to reduce processing time from 20 seconds to 10 from next year.
The EU EES is stuck in the last century.
thetimes.com/article/e736b8a…
Another day, another example of EU EES incompetence. (For EU citizens too in this case)
Why do we tolerate it?
Who has been fired in the EC for the waste of billions of hours of citizens’ time..?
AI scaling from plates to tanks...

For nearly 15 years, I sent @tim_cook a weekly report every Sunday night on the global App Store business. My team and I packed it with data, charts, and commentary on what was happening around the world.
Most weeks: silence. Every so often, a probing question would come back about a specific metric or market. Or, better, a note congratulating us on a strong quarter.
Those reports taught me a lot about discipline and accountability. No matter where I was in the world, I sent that report. Tim expected his leaders to know their businesses cold. Whenever I put anything in front of him, I needed to understand not just the numbers, but what was driving them and what we were doing about it. His expectations made me a much better leader.
On my last day at Apple, Tim and I had a 10-minute 1:1 scheduled. We talked for 30. Reflecting on my 21 years at the company, he told me my greatest accomplishment wasn’t helping build a $1 trillion App Store ecosystem or helping scale the business to more than one billion customers. It was the team I had built and the leaders I had developed who were ready to step up after I left. That meant the world to me. We took this photo together right after that conversation.
Today is Tim’s last day as CEO of Apple. Much has been written about what he and the company accomplished under his leadership. But perhaps his greatest legacy is the one he taught me to value: the people he developed, the culture he shaped, and the leaders ready to carry it forward.
I’ll always be grateful I got to be a part of it.
I've been sharing this episode with everyone I know for the section on pesticides and infertility / cancer rates... About halfway through...

Staggering that @ASA_UK allows this ad (being shown at UK cinemas) - basically saying these diabetes/obesity causing ultra-processed foods are “better” than a healthy salad. @pepsi you make me sick. And you’re making the world sick.

Update: have reported to the ASA...
Complaint regarding Pepsi Cinema Advert – Misleading Health Claims and Promotion of Unhealthy Eating Habits. This is the ad: youtube.com/watch?v=2opZZtAz…
Complaint: I am writing to lodge a complaint regarding the cinema advertisement for Pepsi Max titled "Your Meals Better with Pepsi" under the BCAP Code Section 13 (Food, food products, diet and health) and Section 3 (Misleading advertising).
Key Issues:
1. Discouraging Healthy Eating Choices: The advert depicts an individual eating a plain meal/salad [00:09], describing it negatively as "meh", and replacing/pairing it with fast food items (burgers, fried food) alongside Pepsi, accompanied by the voiceover "Don't make it meh... make it tasty, make it refreshing, that's better." This directly disparages healthier options (like salads) in favour of high-fat, high-salt, or ultra-processed foods.
2. Misleading Nutritional Context: By framing ultra-processed fast food paired with a soft drink as superior or "better" than a wholesome salad, the ad undermines general public health guidance surrounding balanced diets, nutrition, and the prevention of health issues like obesity and diabetes.
3. Responsibility in Advertising: Under BCAP Rule 13.4, broadcast advertisements must not encourage poor nutritional habits or disparage healthy diets. The tone of the advertisement explicitly encourages viewers to reject balanced meals in favour of high-fat/processed alternatives.
The UK has the wealthiest 66-75 year olds in Europe (apart from Luxembourg). @andyburnham surely it’s time to ditch the Triple Lock.
“Celebrities monetise their brand by selling consumer commodities like tequila. Our version of this in Silicon Valley is starting a Venture Fund - all these people who have the ability to raise gobs of cash and do really hard things, they sit on the roof like BigHead from HBO’s Silicon Valley and raise a venture fund, and piddle around with AI, but we really need them to be founders, we need them to be heroes.”

This is excellent
Britain is in an Energy Emergency.
But the Government is FAILING TO ACT. They have no plan, no idea what to do, and they’re leaving us exposed.
So today we’re launching The LFG Emergency Energy Bill to SAVE OUR INDUSTRIES and GET BILLS DOWN
Here’s how it would get bills down IMMEDIATELY:
1️⃣ SCRAP all levies on energy bills. These stealth taxes on the British people are unnecessarily hiking up their bills by hundreds of pounds.
2️⃣ REOPEN THE NORTH SEA, and directly deploy the tax revenue generated to GET BILLS DOWN.
3️⃣ Stop new CfD contracts and launch an investigation into the system that signed them off. Last year, billpayers paid £1.5 billion for big renewable corporations to THROW ENERGY AWAY. By 2030, it’ll be £8 billion. The existing settlement is a national scandal.
4️⃣ Scrap Clean Power 2030 targets. These needless constraints have pushed civil servants to procure wind at any cost – and at huge expense to the British people.
5️⃣ DITCH the duties of energy regulators, NESO and Ofgem, towards Net Zero goals, so their only focus is to MINIMISE ENERGY COSTS, subject to security of supply.
6️⃣ Hold auctions for connecting to the grid, and directly deploy the revenue generated to GET BILLS DOWN
Our Emergency Energy Bill has cross-party support. It is ready to PASS IMMEDIATELY. It does what governments for the past 20 years didn’t – it takes RADICAL ACTION to SAVE OUR INDUSTRIES and GET BILLS DOWN.
There’s no excuse. Last week, the US suspended access to some of the world’s leading frontier AI models. Britain is vulnerable - and our energy prices are strangling our national security. We cannot afford to be at the mercy of other countries or events beyond our control any longer.
The Government needs to GET BILLS DOWN NOW or explain why they’re still letting this emergency destroy our future.
Force Westminster to ACT. Send our Bill to your local MP and sign our letter to the Prime Minister and Ed Miliband. GET BILLS DOWN, NOW!

This is, perversely, good news for Britain, Australia, Japan, Europe, and other countries being cut off that would once have seen themselves as close allies of the United States.
It shows us what the future may hold if AI is the strategically and economically decisive technology of the 21st century and is controlled by the US and China. It is good news because *it may be happening early enough to give us time to act.*
I think this will be rescinded pretty soon, but it’s a sign of things to come. In a future where frontier models cannot be used outside the US, our industries and economies will fall behind and American businesses may not be able to operate overseas. We won’t be able to defend ourselves militarily with defence systems built on obsolete software. Europe 2031 is a good scenario of what a future like this could mean: europe2031.ai
Some of the things we need to do are ‘no regrets’ measures we should do anyway. But some are genuinely costly and risky.
We need cheap electricity – powered by gas, coal (this is costly, coal is very bad), deregulated nuclear fission – whatever can provide *cheap, reliable, 24/7* power. This almost certainly excludes wind power, which is enormously expensive and unreliable. We need projects to be able to connect to the grid in days rather than years by paying for fast-track connections.
We need to make it incredibly easy to build data centres, with the property taxes retained locally and hypothecated for local tax cuts so there is some direct benefit for locals. This doesn’t need to be nationwide.
We need to create new regulatory regimes for innovative businesses that give them the right to hire and fire staff with ease. The difficulty and cost of firing staff is one of the main reasons Europe has fallen behind so badly. We need to create a parallel employment regime that companies and workers can opt in to: worksinprogress.co/issue/why…
Even though I think it will probably fail, I think we should probably try to create a good, non-American frontier AI lab. I am quite pessimistic about this – even extremely well-resourced, innovative software companies are struggling to do this. But the stakes are so high that not trying seems foolish.
One thing that might work in our favour is the number of brilliant AI engineers who are not US citizens, who under the current export controls do not have access to Mythos/Fable even if they live and work in the US. What happens to Demis Hassabis, Ilya Sutskever, Andrej Karpathy, and the many other Europeans, Canadians, etc who are working on AI models in Britain and America who are affected by this?
I do not think we should force our own companies to use model, because this would exacerbate their economic weakness – this lab should have to compete on an even playing field. I am deeply sceptical that this can work, but we cannot rule it out. If we do it, it has to be able to pay US salaries, operate without political constraints. worksinprogress.co/issue/how…
It is cope to tell yourself that Trump is an aberration or that these export controls are a one-off. To repeat, I think these specific controls will be lifted quickly and it will be easy to move on and forget it happened. But this is a look into a potential future. Every one of us that is not a US citizen is at risk. The standard political divides do not apply here; the question is whether you grasp the enormity of AI as a technology. We have to act!
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees.
The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance.
Access to all other Claude models is not affected.
We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible.
