Chapman’s Peak Drive is regarded as one of the world’s most scenic road trips. How lucky are we to have it on our doorstep? Running almost 9km between Hout Bay and Noordhoek on Cape Town's western coast, and with mountains rising up on one side and the Atlantic Ocean crashing below on the other, there is an incredible view at every curve — all 114 of them. If you ever need a reminder of how insignificant we are as humans, just drive this route for 25min 🤣 ✅ Chapmans Peak Drive (@ChapmansPeakSA) is a testament to nature's beauty. Known as "Chappies" to locals, this renowned coastal route offers an unparalleled journey through awe-inspiring vistas and natural scenery. ✅ The combination of steep, almost thrilling rocky inclines, shimmering blue waters and expansive skies simply take the breath away. To compensate for this, there are a number of rest areas en route where one can simply stop and drink in the views or picnic. ✅ This road trip is essential for those seeking South Africa's most breathtaking coastal views. Although the country is filled with gorgeous landscapes, nothing beats driving along Chapmans Peak. ✅ The road’s closure, due to a fatal rock fall in late 1999, for just short of three years, severely impacted on these residents’ productivity as it did on South Africa’s economy, denying visitors to the country some of the best scenery on the Cape Peninsula. Nonetheless, the upgrading of Chapmans Peak Drive has gone on to win international acclaim as one of the most innovative road engineering projects, beating another eight international projects to win the 2004 civil engineering award for road design. North to South or South to North? I have driven both directions many times and it's impossible to pick a preference. My suggestion is do both and you will literally get double the beauty and exhilaration. Yes, I know this is a cop out but I'd love to hear about your preference and why 🤣 Truth be told, there isn't a single picture that does Chapman's Peak Drive justice but I hope this short clip driving North to South does it some justice.
