10-19-1980- The Eagles cap the great Philly sports day
The Eagles delivered a statement victory over the Dallas Cowboys, winning 17–10 1980, in a pivotal NFC East showdown. The win improved Philadelphia's record to 6–1 and strengthened its position as one of the NFC's top teams.
Dallas struck first when Cowboys linebacker Mike Hegman recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, giving the visitors a 7–0 lead. The Eagles responded in the second quarter with a 35-yard field goal by Tony Franklin, followed by a five-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ron Jaworski to Harold Carmichael. Dallas tied the game at 10–10 before halftime with a 33-yard field goal by Rafael Septien.
After a scoreless third quarter, Jaworski connected with Charlie Smith on a 15-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Franklin's extra point put Philadelphia ahead 17–10, and the Eagles' defense held Dallas scoreless for the entire second half to secure the victory.
The takeaway: This was a hard-fought division win that showcased Philadelphia's resilience.
