Excited to say I have made it to Professor 🎉 🎉 🎉. An emotional moment 🥲!! Big thanks to all my coworkers, collaborators friends and family, who not only made it possible but also made the journey fun too 😁!!
New study by Magdalena Sovakova, who studied for her Ph.D. with me, on colchicine, which has recently been finding new utility in CVD. Big thanks also to all the other contributors. doi.org/10.1016/j.ejphar.202…
Very nice to catch up with people from my MRC PPU days as Prof Susanna Fagerholm gave today’s seminar. Susanna is currently visiting Scotland as a Global Fellow at St Andrews. Philip Cohen was Susanna’s PhD supervisor when I was a postdoc, and Jean Harthill was a postdoc then too

⚡ The @LabSakamoto has discovered molecular pathways that quality control and optimize mitochondrial function. The research, published in the scientific journal @MolecularCell, could open up new avenues for treating a wide range of diseases by restoring the balance of these crucial energy producers within our cells.
🤝 The discovery arose from a unique collaboration between three different research groups. At the @dundeeuni @mrcppu, the @LabGanley possess expertise in mitophagy, while the @CarolMacKintos1 Lab works on the phosphoprotein-binding 14-3-3 proteins. These two labs teamed up with the Sakamoto Group at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, who focus on AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a master regulator of energy metabolism.
💬 “This fruitful collaboration exemplifies the power of collaboration in synergizing efforts from scientists with unique expertise in approaches, techniques, and tools to solve complex scientific problems. The work provides new insights into the role for AMPK in coordinating energy balance through quality controlling mitochondria,” says Professor @Kei__Sakamoto.

My bike got nicked today in Dundee - Trek Roscoe. It’s identifiable so DM me if you see anything like it for sale online or in Dundee!
Really pleased that I’ve been appointed Head of Division - Diabetes, Endocrinology and Reproductive Biology. Looking forward to this exciting new role!

More Angus hills today 🏃♂️, between Glenmoy and Glen Lethnot. Cloudy but the rain stayed off. If you like the outdoors, come and work in Dundee! It’s all a stone’s throw away.
