Most people judge a betting model on profit. It is the slowest way to find out anything. Better question: how close was my forecast to reality, compared to the bookmaker's forecast? Say your model gives a match 60% for over 2.5 goals. It finishes 3-1. Truth was 1, you were 0.40 off. Square it. Do that for every match, take the average. That is Brier. Log loss does the same but punishes confident mistakes far harder. That makes it the better one. A model that finds real edges has to be confident sometimes. Log loss rewards that when you are right and destroys you when you are not. Brier treats a bold call and a safe one almost the same. Now strip the margin out of the bookmaker's odds and run the same numbers on them. Same matches, side by side. Lower score than the book means you know something the market does not. One detail most people miss: do not measure this across every match. Measure it on the ones you would actually bet. A model can be average overall and sharp exactly where it disagrees with the book. Those are the only matches that pay. Why this beats waiting for profit: you can score every match in the league, not just your bets. Hundreds a week instead of twenty.
