Grateful to @coincenter for publishing this and allowing me to be their first guest-post!
Practical obscurity protected people because compiling a life from scattered records was expensive. Digitization and AI inverted that cost structure. Engineered obscurity restores it by permitting verification without compilation.
Digitization and AI have erased the costs that once protected our privacy. A new generation of cryptography is bringing them back.

Patrick Witt worked tirelessly in his role shaping crypto policy, and the industry benefited from his leadership. Public service rarely gets the appreciation it deserves and he stepped up at every turn. Thank you, @patrickjwitt!
Serving in this administration has been the privilege of a lifetime.
From helping to stand up the most successful presidential transition in history alongside @howardlutnick and @EDSecMcMahon, to rebuilding our defense industrial base as PTDO Deputy Under Secretary for R&E and then Acting Director of OSC at @DeptofWar, to driving forward President Trump’s vision to make the United States the “crypto capital of the world” as Executive Director of the @WhiteHouse Crypto Council, I consider myself to have been the luckiest guy in the world over these past two years.
First and foremost, I want to thank @POTUS for the opportunity to serve the American people again in your second term. Your clear-eyed vision to ensure the United States remains the undisputed global superpower at this time of unprecedented technological change and geopolitical strife is critical to our nation’s future prosperity.
Second, I want to thank @DavidSacks for your visionary leadership and mentorship. I am so grateful to have been able to work with you and learn from you over the past year. Thank you also to @USWREMichael, James Mazol, @HarryYJung, Nick Elliot, Tyler Williams, @lukejpettit, Jonathan Hurowitz, Andrew Rittenhouse, Michael Friedman, @atitus7, @passalacqua_mj, @willscharf, @JamesCBraid, @MayMailman, Steve Levine, Patrick Butler, Zach Carstens, and countless others across the administration for being the best colleagues anyone could ask for. It was an honor to serve alongside you.
Lastly, thank you to @SECPaulSAtkins and @ChairmanSelig, @SecScottBessent, @USComptroller Gould, @SenatorTimScott, @SenLummis, @SenatorHagerty, @berniemoreno, @JohnBoozman, @SenThomTillis, @RepFrenchHill, and @RepBryanSteil for your partnership in advancing crypto policy over the past year with the passage of the GENIUS Act and our work to advance the CLARITY Act. With regulators and elected officials like you, I rest easy knowing the future of digital asset innovation in America is bright.
Regarding next steps, I’ll have to more to share soon. For now, I’ll say this: I am extremely bullish on America as we embark upon a new golden age of technological advancement across multiple frontiers. I’m grateful to have done my part to unleash American innovation while in government, and I look forward to advancing that same mission in the private sector! 🇺🇸
In a @coincenter essay I argued our old data collection habits are incompatible with digitization & AI: we assemble the whole profile to answer one question. Today's Supreme Court case is a result. Salazar says a site tied his viewing history to his identity and sent it to Facebook for advertising. The Court will decide if a 1988 video rental law protects him. Engineering obscurity says his profile need not be assembled at all. xitter.cf/coincenter/status/2103…

New: an AI company now lets cops identify specific houses, using data from Zillow/Airbnb, based on a single photo. It's part of Raven, previously called Geospy. Company previously demoed its tools to catch people vandalizing Flock cameras or protesters

The Ninth Circuit just ruled that a leak of your health data is itself an injury. No identity theft or misuse needed. You can sue.
Every company sitting on personal data now holds a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Data is becoming a liability.

Once identity data is pooled and queryable at scale, compiling 8.8 million files is cheap. Engineered obscurity restores the cost.

American AI leadership requires U.S. open-source technology as the foundation other countries build on. As China pairs open models with affordable infrastructure and training, America needs competitive alternatives, writes BPI's Head of Government Affairs Ken Egan @Bayman11771 in @thecipherbrief.
That means capable open models, affordable hardware, financing, and support that give partners control over their AI systems.

Sacks: when labs “align” a model, ask to whose values.
That’s the decentralized AI/Bittensor case in point. Miners produce the work. Validators score it. Community consensus turns those scores into rewards. Value judgments aren’t declared opaquely by one lab.

Just a couple decades ago, public records stayed mostly private because accessing them took real effort. The Supreme Court called it "practical obscurity."
The internet reduced the cost of accessing public data, and AI has made it easier still. Assembling data about almost anyone on the planet has never been easier.
@GoBankYourself on how zero-knowledge cryptography can rebuild that protection by design, via @coincenter:

It is fair to say that the part of our work that I am most interested in these days is around the future of privacy in this weird digital world that is developing, which is why this piece @GoBankYourself wrote for us resonated so much. Definitely worth your time to read.
In our first guest post, @GoBankYourself explains the death "practical obscurity." It used to be more effort than it was worth to piece together a picture of someone's life. Now with AI, its trivially easy.
Flock, financial history, browsing data, everything. It's all going to be connected.

Statement on today’s CLARITY Act vote:
Today’s outcome is a missed opportunity for American businesses, consumers, and U.S. competitiveness, but the need for clear, predictable rules for digital assets remains as urgent as it ever has. Thank you to the members of Congress and their staff who worked tirelessly to get us this far. We will continue partnering with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to move a durable framework forward and ensure the U.S. remains the innovation capital of the digital assets industry.
