nytimes.com/2026/10/16/magaz… “The modern Democratic party blob was shaped by the post-1968 reforms, but also by a very different erosion of party power that occurred in the G.O.P. over the same period: the rise of a party-conquering conservative movement backed by business-linked philanthropists,” @chashomans writes in @nytimes. “Liberal activists first lamented that movement’s network of think tanks, grass-roots organizations and ideologically aligned media, then tried to imitate it, building their own party-outside-of-a-party infrastructure. … “Relying on outside organizations and super PACs has also brought a fundamental instability to the work of campaigning,” according to Homan. “Over the past decade and a half, Democrats have come to depend on grass-roots organizations focused on Black, Latino and young people to register and mobilize voters. But the downsides of that reliance became clear in recent cycles, as those demographics grew less uniformly Democratic and groups like the now-defunct New Georgia Project—a powerful force in Democratic campaigns in that state for a decade — fell victim to chronic nonprofit problems of infighting and fundraising struggles. “Dark money is even more unstable, as the structured donor alliances of two decades ago are supplanted by plutocratically wealthy individual givers.”

“Since Leo’s election, one Vatican foundation has welcomed twenty-five new American donor families, reflecting renewed enthusiasm among those who are hopeful that Leo may be more business-friendly. Financial patronage often follows perceived ideological alignment. If the pope continues to challenge prevailing political and economic orthodoxies, some of that support may again prove contingent.” Colleen Dulle responds to Jack Hanson’ s cover story on the Catholic Church. harpers.org/archive/2026/10/…
