Huh
Maybe the only class you could take way back then was mathematics and it covered anything there was to learn? π
Month 3 into my Greek learning:
- finally started an Anki π¬π· deck! πͺ
- reading is better but my memory remainsπ§
Ok so it took me just under a year of studying every day, but I finally did it.
Duolingo Spanish is now done!β
What's next?
More studying! π
It just never frigging ends with languages, does it.
Day 30 β
π’π!
Themes in software craftsmanship:
- conquer complexity!πͺ
- be sensitive to indications that your program is hard to understand (people first, computers second)
- Iterate, repeatedly, again & again
- a blanket attempt to avoid mistakes is the biggest mistake of all
Day 29 β
!
On personal character:
- persistence can be either an asset or a liability (know when to give up, Evaπ
)
- to be a great developer, develop the right habits
β Programming is about communicating with another programmer first and communicating with the computer second.
Day 28β
so close to π!
On commenting:
- good code is its own best documentation
- focus comments on the why rather than the how
- document surprises, justify violations of good programming style, prepare the reader for what is to follow
βDon't comment tricky code; rewrite it!
Day 27 β
almost there!
On layout and style:
- The fundamental theorem of formatting: good visual layout shows the logical structure of a program
- Usewhitespacetoincreasereadibility
- for C languages: emulating pure blocks (putting end `}` on a separate line to emulate `end If`)
Day 26 β
!
Programming tools:
- I actually didn't write up any notes on this chapterπ
- a lot has changed in the past 20 years
- can't imagine programming without version control, syntax checkers and code prettifiers π³
- also, working in a huge codebase sounds like a nightmare
Day 25β
pg 709 π!
On integration:
- the activity in which you combine separate software components into a single system
- any sort of incremental integration (e.g. T-shaped) is better than phased integration
- make sure to build and test daily (aka CI? π€)
- automate stuff
Day 24 β
!
Managing construction:
- configuration management aka change control aka always have backups πͺ
- set goals! measure stuff!
- "Programmers and managers are people, and they work best when treated as such." #wat? π³
Yeah, this chapter was a little odd π
