As a disability rights advocate and a plague nerd, I am begging you to remember that there are many polio survivors still living, that they led the first wave of the modern disability rights movement, and you should TALK TO THEM.

why do academics think it is ok to expect service users and others be involved in research without the choice of being paid for it, when they themselves expect to be paid. More on this recent experience shortly.

Significantly this systematic review found ZERO interventions promoting access to maternal health, family planning and contraception, or safe abortion for people with disabilities in LMICs! #SRHR #Health #Disabilities
We're VERY excited about this new systematic review of interventions to promote sexual & reproductive health of persons with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries @GlobalHealthBMJ by our @LSHTM colleagues @ICED_LSHTM. Have a read: gh.bmj.com/content/5/10/e002… #SRHR #health

While nondisabled people are agonizing whether they could handle the “ burden” of being with a disabled person, disabled people have already decided that anyone who feels we are burdens are themselves too much of a burden.
Disabled people aren’t millstones.

Characterizing someone as a “burden” is thoroughly devaluing and dehumanizing.
It is a harmful ableist slur.
A disabled person is not a burden.
A chronically ill person is not a burden.
No human being is a burden.

Covid19, Public transits almost eliminate designated disability accessibility seats including the adjustable front door. Now, everyone enters most buses through the back door. Disability accessibility must not be treated as a temporal accommodation to be eliminated during crisis.

Medical professional:”How long have you been-what’s the term-
wheelchair-bound or confined to a wheelchair?”
Me:”I’m a wheelchair user.”
The medical perspective that
views someone who uses a wheelchair as “bound” or “confined” is ableist and restrictive.

Neighbor:”How do you refer to yourself? Disabled? Differently
abled?”
Me:”I’m a disabled person.”
Neighbor:”I refuse to use that term. You’re not disabled. You have abilities.”
Disability is not the opposite of ability.
Disability is not inability.

Bus passenger:”Can I sit in front?”
Driver:”Are you disabled?”
Passenger:”No. How come he’s allowed in the front?”
Driver:”He’s in a wheelchair.”
Passenger: “How do you know he’s not faking?”
Even in a pandemic, the disability police are out in force.

I met with a gentleman today who wanted assistance in portraying himself better to #employers. He is worried his #Disability is a factor in his run of bad luck with interviews. The fact someone even needs to entertain this thought in 2019 is a shocking inditement of where we are. – at Queensland, Australia

If you’re a wheelchair user, or a blind person, indeed a human being, I predict these two wheeled electric scooters, will become very annoying. They seem to be abandoned, in the middle of the pavement, everywhere I go. I saw three from the station to my hotel. #disability

I just got asked if I “need that wheelchair,” because I “look so capable.”
All I wanted was a cup of coffee before work, and instead I got a steaming cup of #ableism. Wow.

Me:A wheelchair user in close proximity to a store cash register with merchandise in my hand.
Man cuts right in front of me.
Me:”Excuse me?”
Man:”Oh. Were you on line? I didn’t see you sitting there.”
Carelessness or willful invisibility?
