1/8 The new TIME investigation turns Israel’s global info op about “Qatari money in Gaza” on its head. Israel was not a passive observer. Netanyahu’s government actively facilitated a programme that channelled nearly $2 billion in assistance into Hamas-governed Gaza over more than a decade time.com/article/2026/10/18/…

🇵🇸 I condemn in the strongest terms the attack by masked settlers in Taybeh, in the occupied West Bank, against Palestinians, our Consul General, French and Polish diplomats as well as catholic representatives. A French mayor was assaulted and a Belgian vehicle damaged. Our team is safe. Palestinians face this violence every day. Settlers also target journalists reporting on it and diplomats. Harvesting olives, reporting the news or carrying out diplomatic duties should never put anyone at risk of attack. As the occupying power, Israeli authorities must protect Palestinians, ensure the safety of diplomats and journalists, and bring those responsible to justice. Impunity for violent settlers must end. Belgium will continue to press for EU sanctions against those responsible for this violence and those who support them. This violence cannot be separated from Israel’s illegal settlement policy. Belgium condemns settlement expansion and attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians from their land. The occupation of the Palestinian territory must end. @BelgiumMFA @BelgiumJRS

Simultaneously pathetic and outrageous. Under international law, as accepted even by Israel, the IDF Commander of the Central Command is the sovereign in the occupied West Bank. The IDF regime backs settler terrorists and abandons to their fate Palestinians under our rule. The savage attacks on Palestinians have been going on for months and years with the IDF, at best, turning a blind eye to the terror, and at times participating in "the festivities". The IDF has now been taught that the world will give us a pass on pogroms against Palestinians, but is less tolerant when the victims are European diplomats and members of the press. That does not speak well of "the world". It's long overdue to conclude that we will not stop until we are stopped.
The IDF strongly condemns the severe act of violence that took place in the area of Taybeh, during which diplomatic representatives were attacked by Israeli rioters. Police forces and forensic investigators from the Judea and Samaria District are entering the area accompanied by IDF soldiers and will begin collecting findings and evidence, as well as taking testimonies, in support of an investigation that has been opened. The consulate's visit was not coordinated with the IDF. Such coordination is important to prevent incidents of this kind. According to a preliminary inquiry, no IDF soldiers were present at the scene at the time of the attack. The report was sent to the brigade operations room, which is designated to receive reports from security personnel only, and not from civilians. The operations room receives dozens of operational reports each day and responds only to authorized personnel, not civilians. It should be emphasized that other designated channels are available for civilians to submit complaints. All circumstances surrounding the incident will be examined.

European Council (27 heads of states) sharpens its warning to Israeli companies & banks not to participate in E1 or other settlement developments. First time it refers to "economic" consequences & names "financial institutions". UK gov leadership definitely contributed to this.
Breaking and of paramount importance. Europe is telling Israel in no uncertain terms: don't build E-1, and telling Israeli developers and financial institutions that if they take part in E-1, they risk grave consequences. The EU Council Conclusions published today articulate the shared strategic policy of the EU, and are endorsed by the heads of state and governments of the 27 member states - and they single out E-1: " The European Council urges Israel to immediately reverse the expansion of settlements, which are illegal under international law, including by withdrawing its tender for construction in the E1 area. It reiterates that businesses should not bid for construction contracts for E1 or other settlement developments and underlines the legal, economic and reputational consequences for businesses and financial institutions participating in settlement construction, including the risk of serious breaches of international law". You're not imagining. This is also endorsed by Germany, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic - those countries who are traditionally very cautious in these matters. The die is cast. The bidding period in the tenders for the first 1,234 residential units end three days from now, on October 19. The Netanyahu Regime will not balk. Whether lIsraeli developers and financial institutions will risk sanctions and participate in the bidding remains to be seen. consilium.europa.eu/media/4t…

There are few more revolting sights than a careless, over-paid Murdoch hack smearing a principled writer who is bravely opposing the brutal slaughter of innocent civilians, many of them children
Boulton "she, in common with a lot of people in Ireland is taking a very strong pro Palestine & I have to say anti Israel & anti Jewish stance" Adam, can you provide evidence that Sally Rooney is taking an anti Jewish stance? Or are you in fact lying to smear critics of Israel?

Thanks to the geniuses rewriting 1991, here is the American record: “Thank you again, and again thanks to your young men.” George H. W. Bush to Qatar, 2 February 1991, after Khafji. Qatar helped retake the town and yes, rescued trapped U.S. Marines. 🇶🇦🇺🇸
Emir of Qatar said his country’s revenue dropped by 42 percent in first half of this year due to Islamic Iran strikes on tankers and closure of Hormuz. Sometimes, I think “thank God Qatar did not exist when Saddam invaded Kuwait in 1990.” Doha would have started a mediation to appease the tyrant and give him the Mubarak Port and the border oil fields. Qatar is the worst thing that has happened to the Gulf region since 1999.

The most extraordinary part of all this is that for an entire day *nobody* in the U.S. government wants to take responsibility for or even acknowledge the abrupt decision to cripple Ukrainian military capabilities by throttling Starlink/Starshield.
Seems pretty clear that someone in the U.S. government has made a conscious decision to make it easier for Russians to kill Ukrainians, in cities and on the frontlines.

Shocking poll results of the Shia community in Lebanon. If the survey was not conducted by a reputable company, Statistics Lebanon, I would have dismissed it because the results show a truly stunning collapse of support for Hezbollah among the Shia community. This collapse is an undeniable fact based on my conversations with Shia friends in Lebanon, following social media production by Shia (including videos and thousands of comments on popular Facebook pages for Shia communities), and the testimonies of Shia journalists and scholars. Still, the numbers are surprising. The most shocking results: - 42% of Shia feel disappointed, angry or worried about the conduct of the leadership of Hezbollah - 37% trust in Hezbollah greatly, 22.4% trust to some extent, 23.6% do not trust Hezbollah much, 15% do not trust Hezbollah at all. Previously 85% expressed trust in Hezbollah - 52% do not trust Hezbollah's social & service institutions (likely due to favoritism in distribution) - 52.4% do not trust the media outlets affiliated with Hezbollah. - Only 2% would prefer to send their children to schools run by Hezbollah (Mehdi and Mustafa schools) - 42.3% believe Hezbollah has not achieved any of its goals and that the costs of the war were exceedingly high 25% believe Hezbollah achieved only part of its goals and the costs of the war were exceedingly high. A total of 67.4% put together. 14% say it's too early to tell - 63.3% support a deal with Israel (either direct talks, through mediation, or a total regional agreement) - 9% support a deal that will be sponsored by Iran - 66.4% support handing over Hezbollah's weapons to the state 29.6% support preserving Hezbollah's weapons - 51.1% see he Lebanese Army as the biggest contributor to guaranteeing security in the long run 16.5% see Hezbollah this way - 71% Believe war & peace decisions should only be made by Lebanon's leadership 12% Support Hezbollah making its own decisions on these matters - Only 5% believe using force is legitimate to express opposition to the government's position on disarming Hezbollah - 80% see their Lebanese identity as more important than their sectarian or partisan affiliation Source: al-Jadeed TV discussion with the CEO of Statistics Lebanon youtube.com/watch?v=Tb_e5rTC…

A useful summary of a new Haaretz article that reinforces the NAZA narrative: ‘The target category expanded until it covered the entire population. Before Oct 7, only brigade commanders and up. Then drivers. Then any adult male within 300 meters of troops. Then anyone entering a damaged building to retrieve blankets.’ NAZA was a method of genocide.
A new Haaretz investigation by Yaniv Kubovich (Oct takes the NAZA system the film exposed and shows how it was built and who set the defaults using four witnesses from Military Intelligence and the drone array: 1) A drone operator says that from the first day the array was set to the "expanded" fire tier (anyone ever identified with Hamas) and to NAZA level 3 by default. Up to 20 dead civilians per strike needed no sign-off from anyone outside the strike cell. The 20 was the baseline, not an escalation. 2) The film described a "factory of targets." Haaretz describes who staffed it. Reservists who had never served in intelligence were brought into the Targets Directorate and "searched for the most negligible targets, the small fry." Anyone with Hamas symbols on Facebook was marked. "It's at the level that we struck Hamas drivers." 3) The target category expanded until it covered the entire population. Before Oct 7, only brigade commanders and up. Then drivers. Then any adult male within 300 meters of troops. Then anyone entering a damaged building to retrieve blankets. 4) The Jabaliya strike on Ibrahim Biari (Oct 31, 2023). Haaretz adds the decision chain. The buildings were chosen because they sat over a tunnel, they were still populated, and "we did not carry out an evacuation, because it was important to kill him without him escaping." Aman's estimate was 250 to 300 civilians, so the decision went to the chief of staff. He approved it. The post-strike count: about 250 dead, for a battalion commander who weeks earlier "was not even considered a collection target of ours." 5) When the number got too big to approve, they stopped approving and kept striking. One cell calculated roughly 1,000 civilians still inside high-rises on an entry route into Gaza City. "NAZA 1,000 was not approved there. Instead it was approved to begin striking and allow the residents to flee during the operation." The ceiling was removed by relabeling. 6) Dissent was punished. Soldiers argued over killing "looters," meaning Palestinians retrieving food and bedding from damaged homes. A unit commander threatened to remove anyone who kept using the word "looters" or questioned the word "targets." 7) The IDF lied about results in real time. On the strike on Nukhba commander Ali Qadi, at home with his family: "In practice Qadi was the only one who survived the strike. None of the dead were connected to the target." 8) After March 2025 the strategic rationale was gone and the killing continued at the same settings. One operator describes a junior target "standing in the garden with his family, washing the children with a hose," seconds from launch. Colleagues still wanted to fire. "I felt we were reaching our moral edge." It is now becoming clear how these orders led to mass slaughter. There was no decision to kill everyone. It just escalated endlessly and the bloodlust and thirst for revenge made sure it never stopped escalating. The genocide continues.

Increased support for Ukraine is an appropriate response to Russian hybrid attacks - NATO Supreme Commander Gen. Alexus Grynkewich "They [Russia] are trying to break our collective will," said Gen. Grynkewich, commenting on the intensifying wave of Russian aggression against Europe, including incursions into NATO airspace, arson, sabotage and cyberattacks. He cited Denmark and Germany as examples of countries that increased their support for Ukraine following hybrid attacks on their territory: "Those are appropriate responses that show Russia that the objectives that they're seeking to attain are unobtainable." "The centrality of Ukraine to European security is undeniable. I think it will become very obvious to them [European leaders] very quickly what the right thing to do is, and why it’s necessary for their own national security," Gen. Grynkewich added. 📹: Bloomberg

Spot on.
At some point, we will have to blame Mearsheimer, Sachs, and their fellow travelers for much more than just peddling wrong explanations and misleading people. These guys have influence in policy circles, their words have policy consequences. They are partly responsible for policies that are based on their explanations. The U.S. has now said no NATO membership for Ukraine — and the Russians didn’t even bother to thank it. The U.S. has pursued deescalation — and the Kremlin merely escalated in return. The U.S. has offered lucrative deals to Moscow — and the Russians have not offered anything at all. The U.S. denigrated and pressured Zelenskyy multiple times — and the Kremlin just clapped. The U.S. pulled Putin out of increasing international isolation by rolling out the red carpet for him in Alaska — and the Kremlin just used “the spirit of Alaska” to support its demands for Ukraine to capitulate. The Russians still demand all of Donbas just to start talking. And the reason for all these failure is rather simple: the U.S. keeps offering things that should appeal to the Russians under the Mearsheimer/Sachs explanation of the war but don’t. Because their explanation is fundamentally and irretrievably wrong. The moment you ditch the Mearshemer/Sachs framework, everything will immediately fall into place and you will understand why all these initiatives never had any chance of success. Putin wants to subjugate Ukraine. That’s the starting point. From this, it follows that he does not want it in NATO. It follows that he does not want it to have an army. It follows that he does not want it to have an independent government. But, you might say, this is consistent with the other framework too. It is. But the imperialist explanation also tells you why Putin is fixated on territories, why he insists on taking Donbas, and why no economic and security concessions work on him. It tells you why all these talks will never work. Mearsheimer is reduced to blubbering utter gibberish when confronted with that reality. After denying expansionist motives for years, he had to bow to reality and so began to claim — without a shred of evidence — that the territorial demands came only after the invasion. That’s despite the Kremlin officially annexing Donetsk and Luhansk even before the invasion, and Putin ceaselessly talking about subjugation and territory. These people are immoral hacks who, to our collective dismay, have long had access and influence in Washington (and elsewhere). Their ideas are partly responsible for the failures of our foreign policy, with the consequences we now face. Their vacuous insistence on peace and blaming the West for Russia’s aggression — along with their incessant clamor for talking to Moscow and normalizing relations — are contributing directly to the prolongation of the war. They embolden the Kremlin to persist and escalate in the expectation that the West would buckle because enough people come to believe these charlatans. These people have the blood of hundreds of thousands on their hands.
