In 2025, Ontario lost 125 people in 110 fatal fires.
This rise isn’t a coincidence.
More fires. More loss.
Safety isn’t luck.
Prevention isn’t random.
A working smoke alarm gives you time when seconds matter most.
We can change this trajectory and protect more families. We can stop adding names to a list that should never grow.
Take action now:
• test your smoke alarms monthly
• check expiry dates
• install alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas
• talk to your family, friends and neighbours to ensure they are protected
We owe it to the 125 lives lost to refuse another year of preventable tragedy.
Make 2026 the year we act.

Power the holidays safely:
• charge lithium-ion devices on hard, flat surfaces
• use the manufacturer’s charger
• unplug when charging is done
• if a battery overheats or swells, replace it right away
Celebrate with peace of mind.

Holiday safety starts with safe HEATING SOURCES. Heating equipment keeps us warm during cold weather, but if used unsafely, it can lead to fires.
Every winter, homes across Ontario experience fires caused by heating equipment.
That’s why communities are promoting safe heating practices:
Have your heating system, vents, and chimneys inspected and cleaned annually by a qualified technician.
Ensure woodstoves, fireplaces, and inserts are installed by a qualified professional.
Always use a fire screen around the fireplace.
Allow ashes to cool before placing them in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid and store it outside.
Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets; never use extension cords.
Turn off heaters when you leave the room.
Install a carbon monoxide alarm to protect against deadly carbon monoxide.
A cozy room should never cost you your home, your holiday, or your life.
Protect your loved ones. Protect your home. Let’s keep Ontario safe - together.
From every community across the province, let’s make this a fire-safe holiday season.
