Gene Baur and I waged farmed animal protection ballot measures together for more than a decade.
In this new Business for Good Podcast, we reflect candidly on that work, where we think the animal movement's succeeded, where it's failed, and what it might be able to achieve now.

There are few things more anti-human than factory farming.
It replaced human farmers with cages and machines. It broke the millennia-old human-animal bond. It elevated the sin of greed over the virtue of compassion.
Caring about that isn't weird. It's core to our humanity.
Excited about my new book coming out in September, and looking forward to using it to help raise awareness and work to end factory farming. amazon.com/Farm-Sanctuary-Fo…

The science shows regenerative grazing simply doesn't work
And I get it, it's a captivating well funded story ($200M from McD's otw), & it's easier to convince many that tweaks are all that's needed vs. systemic changes away from beef

🚨 CALL YOUR SENATORS TODAY: THE PORK INDUSTRY IS HEADING BACK TO WASHINGTON
Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121
Tell your senators:
“Keep the so-called ‘Save Our Bacon’ Act OUT of the Farm Bill. Protect Proposition 12 and state animal protection laws.”
The timing is critical.
The Senate returns to Washington September 14, and Sen. Mitch McConnell, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, is expected to return after an extended absence.
That same week, September 14–18, the National Pork Producers Council is mobilizing around #MeatWeek and bringing pork producers face-to-face with lawmakers to demand what they call a Farm Bill “fix” for California’s Proposition 12.
The House-passed Farm Bill already contains language targeting Prop. 12. The Senate has kept it out so far, but the fight is not over.
The pork industry will be calling and meeting with senators.
We need to be calling too.
📞 Call (202) 224-3121 TODAY. Ask for each of your U.S. senators.
Tell them:
NO Prop. 12 “fix.”
NO Save Our Bacon Act.
Keep state animal protection laws protected.

Farm Sanctuary is saddened by the passing of Bob Weir.
40 years ago, we got our start selling veggie dogs outside Grateful Dead shows—planting the seeds of a sanctuary and a movement.
Rest in peace, Bob. Your spirit lives on.

Plans to build the world's first octopus factory farm have been withdrawn.
Nueva Pescanova planned to confine one million octopuses a year at a facility in the Canary Islands -- packing these solitary, territorial animals at up to fifteen per cubic meter of tank.
They then planned to kill them by submerging them in ice water -- a painful, stressful, slow death.
They pitched the farm as "sustainable" because it would "reduce pressure on fishing grounds." But it would have required catching millions of fish to feed the octopuses.
Animal advocates have stopped this. Now we need to make sure no octopus factory farm gets built anywhere else in the world.

On July 15, the City Council will hold a hearing on Romanch’s Law (formerly Ryder’s Law, Intro 943) — legislation that would permanently end the horse carriage industry, send the horses to loving sanctuaries, and help drivers transition to new employment.
This hearing comes at a heartbreaking moment. Last month, carriage horse Deniz died. Days later, 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan was killed after being thrown from a horse carriage in Central Park during his first trip to New York City. We cannot wait any longer.
Will you testify for Ryder, Deniz, Romanch, and every horse still forced to pull carriages through NYC?
📍 City Hall – Lower Manhattan
🕣 Arrive by 8:30 AM (Enter across the street from 250 Broadway)
🪧 9:00 AM Rally (We will have t-shirts for everyone!)
🗣️ 10:00 AM Public Hearing & Public Testimony

If you can’t attend, please consider making a donation to help us purchase rally signs and t-shirts so we can make our presence impossible to ignore. (vfar.org/donate)
For Ryder. For Deniz. For Romanch. For every horse still waiting. ❤️🐴

While the US Congress debates wiping out state bans on pork from crated pigs, Europe is moving in the opposite direction.
The EU's new Livestock Strategy proposes phasing out crates for pigs, cages for hens, and the killing of day-old male chicks across the continent.
It also proposes requiring imported products to meet basic EU animal welfare standards — exactly what Congress is trying to stop US states from doing.
The EU still needs to turn these proposals into law. But it has put down a clear marker: if the US won't lead on animal welfare, Europe will.
What has brought together @IngrahamAngle, @TomiLahren, @NickKristof, @ezraklein, @Cernovich, @ggreenwald, and countless more conservatives and liberals alike? It's opposing the corrupt "Save Our Bacon" (SOB) Act in the Farm Bill--and the cruel practice of confining a mother pig in a cage so small she's unable to turn around. If SOB passes, millions of pigs are relegated to years of suffering inside these coffin-size cages. More from @KennyTorrella in @voxdotcom.

Today the #SupremeCourt declined to review one more tedious pork industry challenge to a voter-approved state farm animal welfare law.
Massachusetts voters overwhelmingly approved Question 3, which bans the sale of products from cruelly confined egg-laying hens, breeding pigs and calves raised for veal, and this law has now been upheld at every level of the federal judiciary.
This latest rejection protects innovation, market adaptation and meeting consumer demand for more humanely produced food, as so many individual producers in the sector have already done.
