so proud of @HayleyRossLing for getting a best paper award at @GenBench this year!! 🎉🪅🎉 I'm sure @TeaAnd_OrCoffee would be too :) check out our paper and share if you think homemade cats are cats!
New paper with @najoungkim and @TeaAnd_OrCoffee testing if LLMs can draw adjective-noun inferences like humans! Turns out they often can, and even generalize to unseen combinations. But they're more optimistic about "artificial intelligence" than humans. arxiv.org/abs/2410.17482

If this sounds obvious to you, the @GenBench community is also your community. If it doesn’t, you should learn about GenBench (and read our meta-analysis nature.com/articles/s42256-0…). In either case, you’re welcome to join the GenBench Workshop #EMNLP2024 on November 16th ✨
Position: When a foundation model developer reports a test score, they should report the corresponding train-test overlap. Does this happen? Based on public documentation, only 9/30 language models have train-test overlap for the test sets they report on (or have open data).

I won't be at #EMNLP2023, but Batur (@ospanbatyr) will be presenting our work on exploring training dynamics to obtain better compositional generalization at the @GenBench workshop. Please stop by and say 👋to him if you want to learn more! #NLProc

SOTA generalisation testing is what we need! Show your colleagues the GenBench taxonomy (arxiv.org/abs/2210.03050) and ask them to report evaluation cards (genbench.org/eval_cards) to be upfront about their tests. Also take them to the first @GenBench workshop at EMNLP2023 :)
Colleagues showing their accepted NLP work. Me: "what if part of training is in test data?". Them: "we checked and yes, it is" Me: "the paper claims SOTA, doesn't that invalidate your results?" Them: "no because SOTA does the same!" Thank you, I hate my field now.
