Nearly two years ago, Labour broke its election promise to rural communities and made family farms and family businesses its first target, introducing the family farm and family business taxes to fund benefits for others.
It was the start of a pernicious attack on the rural way of life. Tens of thousands left the countryside to protest outside No10 against these death taxes, which threatened farms and businesses that had survived for generations.
The Conservatives stood with farmers. We protested, proved Labour’s costings wrong, shared the heartbreaking stories of affected families, and forced vote after vote in the Commons.
Our collective effort produced one of the most humiliating u-turns of Keir Starmer’s leadership. Labour slipped it out the day before Christmas Eve, hoping nobody would notice, and raised the threshold. Farmers and the Conservatives noticed, and made clear it did not go nearly far enough.
Since then, more than nine in ten farmers have halted investment, and 87% say their profits have been significantly hit. The government is already presiding over record farm closures.
Last week, the Conservatives forced the eighth vote on these taxes. Labour MPs again failed the countryside by voting to keep them.
But with the Budget less than ten days away, there is still time for the new Prime Minister to deliver on his promise to “build back trust” with farming communities.
Number 10 insiders suggest the tax could be abolished or watered down. If true, it would be a huge admission that the government got this policy wrong.
Farming families will neither forgive nor forget the stress they have endured. But scrapping these taxes would give them certainty for the future of their farms, and lift one burden as they recover from the worst harvest on record while facing higher fuel prices, the jobs tax and the fertiliser tax.
This matters to us all. In an increasingly dangerous world, we need farmers to grow the food we eat, not sell up.
Enough is enough. Andy Burnham must axe these vindictive taxes in their entirety.
If he doesn’t, the @Conservatives will scrap them when we return to government.

Worst harvest in a generation, record fuel prices, disease pressure, and a funding window that lasted six hours. Food security is national security - the words are there, the policy needs to match. Increase the Annual Investment Allowance, sort SFI properly, and stop leaving family farms guessing. October Budget needs to deliver.

At the NFU’s Labour Party Conference breakfast, NFU President Tom Bradshaw warned: “Farmers charged with producing the nation’s food, delivering for nature and building the resilience of their businesses have been left high, dry and desperate.”

@DefraGovUK You were warned many times this would go pear shaped but you ignored all those warnings and the result is many farming families and business will not survive, thanks to your incompetence.
🚨 £233 million gone in less than six hours. Now Defra says lessons need to be learned.
After demand for SFI26 saw the entire Window 2 budget allocated on the same day applications opened, Farming Minister Stephen Morgan has said the Government will explore alternatives to the controversial first-come, first-served system for SFI27.
Defra has also announced two exception groups for farmers who missed out, covering those who needed RPA-assisted digital support and those prevented from applying by a technical issue.

Among the many, many stories of disappointment from yesterday's SFI debacle, a notable casualty was the @Gameandwildlife @AllertonProject 's unbroken run of agri-environmental schemes since the '90s. Especially ironic given the research behind so many SFI options took place there

In the absence of anything better to do, most farmers are getting on with, er, farming. How can they be expected to apply for a funding round when they are not sitting around spending wasteful screen time, but tending to their animals, their machinery or land? Ridiculous.

What an absolute farce today has been.
Yet again, our farmers have been significantly let down by this disastrous Labour government. They clearly don’t give a damn.
Huge thanks to all farmers and agents who have contacted me this evening.

£233m #SFI26 Window 2 opened at 10am. Gone by 3.48pm. Looked less like a flagship support scheme and more like a Glastonbury ticket scramble. Some serious questions for Defra...

This is just ridiculous.
DEFRA Minsters need to get real. Through their choices, they have literally designed a scheme around who can hit the ‘apply’ button quickest.
This is not how important decisions should be made. And it certainly isn’t in the best interests of our farmers or the environment.
Labour clearly don’t get it. They were warned about this, and I will be demanding answers.
We can confirm that 50% of the Window 2 budget for SFI26 has now been allocated, based on applications received so far.

15:50. Window 2 100% allocated in less than 4 hours. Many will have blinked and will have missed it entirely. How on earth can this be right?
⚡💥Peter Gadd💥⚡ retweeted
Tens of thousands of farmers are about to miss out on the second round of the Sustainable Farming Incentive.
Those which are successful will get paid much less, to deliver much more.
Labour Ministers need to urgently wake up & start working with our farmers, not against them.

The rural reset has to happen, not for the ‘value’ of the rural vote, but simply because there is a need to recognise the fundamental importance of the role farmers play and of the wider rural economy
“Clumsy” does not begin to describe it.
The family farm tax is a cruel and vindictive assault on a countryside already rinsed by successive governments for decades.
Farmers have been forced to absorb rising costs to keep food cheap, squeezed by supermarkets, undercut by trade deals and abandoned as rural services and infrastructure disappeared.
Then Starmer’s government looked at capital-rich, cash-poor farms and treats the land, buildings and machinery required to produce food as disposable wealth.
A countryside reset requires this punitive tax to be scrapped and farming recognised as essential national infrastructure.

Speaking at the @CAupdates Rural Reset event in London today, Labour peer Lord Blunkett said “The family farm tax was a mistake. It was made by the Treasury and presented by the Government but it was a mistake.”

@EmmaforWycombe You know that £65m is not new money, you’ve taken it from one pocket and put it in another. You call taxing us into extinction, supporting us? True support would be not cutting the delinked payments, (which you did), lowering energy prices, NI contributions, axe APR and BPR, IHT and double cab pick up relief, don’t impose fert tax, sort out SFI, the list goes on and on ……..
5 weeks today since my Blue Tongue test and still NO result received. Are @APHAgovuk totally incompetent?
I tagged you last week @annagelderd about the woeful service from this Government body but despite all your photo opportunities on social
Media you obviously missed this.
Today is 4 weeks since I had an animal tested for suspected Blue Tongue virus. I am yet to receive notification from @APHAgovuk as to the result.
This is an absolute farce, and completely unacceptable. Are you aware of this poor performance by a government agency @annagelderd
