Good to see increased visibility of police and metro police along various highways and byways in Johannesburg in the lead-up to the G20 summit. The deployment of officers in conspicuous locations and the heightened presence of marked vehicles undoubtedly contributes to a reassuring sense of security. Yes, this is particularly crucial in maintaining public order and ensuring the smooth operation of events, especially those with international significance. This increased visibility fosters a sense of safety, which is vital for building and maintaining positive community relations. However, this level of visible policing should not merely be a temporary measure. The need for a strong law enforcement presence, readily visible and accessible to the public, extends far beyond the duration of any specific event. The safety and security of all should be a year-round priority. The continued and consistent deployment of visible policing strategies throughout the year is crucial. This includes maintaining a significant presence on key roads, in public spaces, and in areas known to be susceptible to crime.
