Airbnb is dead. Well it’s not dead but it’s going to be dying soon.
The Bear case for Airbnb.
I’ve been bullish on Airbnb as a company for many years. But my outlook on the business changed this week.
Let me tell you why.
In 2012 I purchased my first Airbnb property. Over the years that one property has turned into a portfolio of high-end Airbnb’s that generates almost $1M a month in rental income.
Using ai agents for the first time this week has completely changed my outlook on the company.
Airbnb is facing an existential threat that most of the market is completely missing.
With Airbnb pushing its mandatory host-side commission to 15.5%, the middleman tax has never been higher.
Enter AI agents. (Hark, Dot, Muse, Grok Bot, etc)
Right now, booking a vacation rental requires navigating a siloed app and paying heavy platform tolls.
But your AI agent won't care about Airbnb's brand wall. When you know the property you want to book and you ask it “what’s the cheapest way to book the property” it will query property management system APIs directly, find the exact same home, and execute a direct booking that saves everyone 15%.
Airbnb's entire model relies on holding supply captive behind a closed interface.
When AI agents can autonomously search, verify reviews, negotiate terms, and book direct with property operators, that walled garden turns into a leaking pipe.
The middleman tax's days are numbered.
I’m predicting that Airbnb’s growth rate will slow down significantly in the next 24 to 36 months. And within 5 years they will be seeing negative growth.
The same can be said for most other online marketplaces that don’t have unique inventory that can only be booked directly on their platform and nowhere else.
Anker power banks (e.g., Nano 10K/30W, MagGo Qi2, or higher-capacity 20K+ models) — Reliable, compact, airline-friendly; strong multi-device charging; consistently top-rated for travel by GearJunkie, Deep Arrival, and multiple 2026 roundups.
Anker Prime GaN chargers (100W–200W) or UGREEN Nexode retractable — Compact multi-port chargers that replace several bricks; ideal for laptops + phones; highly recommended in Gadget Gram and TechRadar travel lists.
Sony WH-1000XM6 noise-cancelling headphones — Best-in-class ANC for flights; lightweight, foldable design, ~30-hour battery; praised as top travel headphones by WIRED, Esquire, Tom’s Guide, and Eurogamer after long-haul tests.
wired.com
Portable SSD (Samsung T9 or SanDisk Extreme) — Fast, rugged photo/video backup; frequently listed in 2026 summer travel tech kits.
AI is shifting from research helper to full booking agent while travelers still prefer final human approval.
Industry lag — Travelers are ~2 years ahead of many destination marketing organizations (only ~22% of DMOs offer AI planning tools).
Infrastructure for AI agents — Sabre, Amadeus, Travelport running MCP servers; Expedia B2B server launching; hotels pushing inventory directly into LLMs.
Big investments & results — Booking Holdings investing ~$700M in AI (10% lower service cost per reservation); global AI-in-travel market hit ~$26.5B; chatbots handle ~80% of routine inquiries.
AI becomes the new front door — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity drive discovery; AI traffic to travel sites up 119–194% YoY; conversion rates now nearly match traditional traffic.
Massive traveler adoption — 54–91% of travelers now use AI for planning (Klook, Mindtrip/Sabre studies); 75% plan to use it more; Millennials/Gen Z treat it like social media.
Agentic AI booking is live — Sabre + PayPal + Mindtrip launched the industry’s first end-to-end agentic pipeline (search → book → pay) for 420+ airlines and 2M+ hotels in a single conversation.

Airbnb sent an email with threats to a user that they will delete their Airbnb account unless he deletes a video he posted about one of his stays
This man rented an Airbnb. After leaving, the Host generated fake cleaning invoices using AI of fake companies. They then claimed to make payments fake payments to them for cleaning services after his stay, and wanted reimbursement
But it was all fake. So he made a post warning others not to stay there, the host has a criminal record and what how they generate fake cleaning bills with AI and want reimbursements
Airbnb took action against him, not the Host, saying he couldn’t post all this publicly available info and to delete the video or they will delete his account
Stop using Airbnb
He even provided Airbnb with proof the invoices were fake and AI-generated, photos disputing the damage claims and the host’s public criminal history and Airbnb still didn’t care

NEW LONG FORM VIDEO: Why nobody books with Airbnb anymore
After going public, Airbnb reached a staggering $128 billion valuation in 2021. That's an incredible number for a company that started with a few air mattresses in a San Francisco apartment. At its peak, Airbnb was worth more than Hyatt, Hilton, and Marriott combined.
But since then, the story has changed. The stock has fallen by nearly a third, travelers are increasingly choosing hotels again, and cities like New York have imposed strict regulations that have dramatically reduced Airbnb listings. Even many of the platform's biggest fans aren't using it as much anymore.
So what happened? Why did one of the most disruptive companies of the last decade lose so much momentum? The answer isn't what most people think.
This is the rise and fall of Airbnb.
