In two years, at least 113 Seattle restaurants, bars & cafés closed — an estimated 1,900 jobs gone. Watch the lights go out.🧵 Sources below.

Workers need employers.
Workers need employers: Workers will be affected by a tax they may never personally pay. A new analysis projects WA state’s income tax will mean fewer jobs, less private investment and fewer new businesses than the state would have without it. #WaLeg bit.ly/4jRFRvA

Been saying this for years. The BLS has shown this stat for quite some time. Or you can just look through the want ads for your local retail or quick service joint. Most start out paying above the Federal minimum wage. "Minimum Wage" is obsolete. Next you should ask, why then are the unions so bent on raising the federal minimum wage if so few are working for that wage? I can tell you, it has nothing to do with " lifting workers out of poverty."
The Federal minimum wage was effectively repealed over the last 17 years.

Mandating wage hikes into the teeth of inflation and job loss....This is Stagwagetion.
Seattle restaurants are facing a perfect storm of inflation, tax hikes, and rising wages. As Restaurant Week kicks off with over 250 participants, these local spots are leaning on community support to keep their doors open amid razor-thin margins. #Seattle #RestaurantWeek

Workers deserve freedom from an unelected academic who has never worked in the industry she claims to represent. Glad to see this coming. Saru Jayaraman and her then org, Restaurant Opportunities Center, influenced the 2021 80/20 rule. Here is a quote from a formal public comment from ROC directed to the DOL while petitioning for the rule: "The restaurant industry is one of the largest and fastest-growing industries in the United States, employing more than 9 percent of the total private-sector workforce—13.5 million people in 2019. ROC United serves and represents all workers in the industry, from traditional Back and Front-of-the-House occupations in fine dining full service restaurants, to combined food prep and serving workers in quick service, to the new and growing segment of app-based delivery." This statement couldn't be further from the truth. If you walked into any random restaurant today and asked if they knew who Restaurant Opportunities Center, One Fair Wage, or Saru Jayaraman are, they wouldn't have a clue. They wouldn't know who the SEIU was either. #WorkerFreedom
American Workers deserve flexibility in their job opportunities, and Job Creators deserve transparency when determining wages paid to their Workers on specific tasks. Under @POTUS, we’re affirming both through @USDOL’s new field assistance bulletin on tipped requirements for workers. READ MORE on @WHD_DOL’s new guidance ⬇️ dol.gov/newsroom/releases/wh…

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency reviewed nine of the nation’s largest banks and found all nine had policies that required, encouraged, or influenced staff to deny or limit service based on customers’ political or religious beliefs or lawful business activity. Debanking people for their political beliefs is a threat to every American’s liberty.

The underlying theme not being discussed here is employee classification. Gig workers are typically not classified as full-time W-2 employees...that is until the unions come in. #WorkerFreedom
DoorDash has ripped off more than 260,000 NYC delivery workers. We’re making them pay $131.5 million — the largest worker settlement in City history. This is New York, where hard work pays and greed will cost you.

This is a screenshot from the email that the Office of Labor Standards sent out today, explaining the Minimum Wage increase. Notice it says, "An annual increase to the Minimum Wage is required." Sematics perhaps. Freudian slip? Maybe. The MW is only REQUIRED to be reviewed via the CPI-W, not REQUIRED to be raised.

It is very curious that Pramila is supporting an income tax that specifically targets retirement accounts. She is aligning with public union bosses who collect more than $150 million per year tax free from members dues. These same bosses are spending millions in members dues to support a tax that targets their own members pensions. Why is the ruling class in WA so insatiably greedy? Vote Yes on I-645 to repeal the unconstitutional income tax
I-645 HURTS working families. Period. Here’s what you need to know: this November, voters in Washington state will decide on a ballot measure aiming to uplift millionaires at the expense of working people. This is simply a ploy for millionaires to lower their own taxes, all while cutting funding for childcare, health care, and K-12 resources in the process. Polling shows Washington voters can see right through it. Voters are rejecting I-645 by nearly 20 points. Washington, you know what to do. Vote NO on I-645 in November.

The unions thrive in darkness. This is the only reason for a bill like this. The unions think that workers will likely side with an employer if that employer is allowed to communicate about unionization with its employees.
🚨 BREAKING: New York Governor Kathy Hochul has just signed an anti-Freedom Foundation bill into law. A.10835-A gives the New York attorney general authority to investigate and fine organizations over communications deemed to falsely impersonate a union.

Service workers need to organize to push back against this. In Seattle, we formed the @FullServiceWkrs and got secure scheduling off the backs of our small businesses. UK can do the same. Let the workers know this is coming.

As early as 5 years ago, I'd be the only commenter telling this congress person that mandating a wage hike was a bad idea. It looks like the message is getting out. People are starting to see the push for these wages hikes for what they are. Hit up the comments section.
As soon as we take the majority back in Congress, the first thing we should do is pass the Living Wage for All Act to raise the federal minimum wage to $25/hr. You can’t live on $7.25 anywhere in America. It’s beyond time to end starvation wages.
