There is a mountain of unworn clothes in the driest desert on earth, large enough to be photographed from space. It grows by 39,000 tons a year and almost none of it will ever rot.
The Atacama, in northern Chile, is a place where it may not rain for a decade. On its edge is a duty-free port called Iquique. Every year about 59,000 tons of clothing arrives there from Europe, America and Asia. It is last season's stock that never sold, and the bags people leave at charity shops.
Dealers pick through it for anything they can resell across South America. Two thirds of it is worthless. Nobody will pay to ship it back out, so lorries drive it into the desert at night and tip it.
The local landfill refuses to take it. The reason given is that the clothing does not biodegrade and is full of chemicals. Most of it is polyester, which is plastic, and in a place with no rain and no soil life it will lie there for centuries. Some of it is set alight, and the smoke drifts over a town of 100,000 people.
In 2025 a Chilean court ruled that the dumps had done serious damage to the land.
For most of history this could not have happened. Clothes were wool, linen and leather. They were worn out, handed down and patched, and at the very end a rag merchant paid for the scraps. In Yorkshire, from 1813, old woollens were shredded and spun into new cloth. Anything left went on the fields, where wool breaks down in months and feeds the grass.
Nobody ever had to find a desert for worn-out wool. We invented a fabric that cannot die, and then we started making it to be thrown away.

If you feed your visiting hedgehogs, they will leave a healthy scent trail that sick hogs will follow.
So sooner or later you will have a casualty arrive who needs taking to a rescue.
It can be a worrying time, but being prepared will make things a lot easier and calmer.
Getting this kit together will take away the worry, and will last you for years of essential service.

I don't live in the middle of the New Forest.
This is a tiny triangle of woods at the end of my road.
But the water I put out there every night is the only water available for miles.
Despite some recent rain, the ponds, rivers and streams are all still dry from the drought.
So these poor deer, along with badgers, foxes, squirrels, hedgehogs, and all manner of birds are forced to travel miles each night to get to this water.
It's a lifesaver for them.
Please be a lifesaver for your local wildlife.
A dish of water in the back and front - even if you don't have a garden - may mean the difference between life and death to some poor struggling animal.
Please keep it full, and keep it clean, every night.
Please don't give up, it may take a while for the wildlife to find you.
Every single hedgehog through these hospital doors this year has been suffering from dehydration.
It's heartbreaking, hearing these dear sweet animals gasp their last breath, knowing that if someone, somewhere, only turned on their tap and put out some water this precious life would have been saved.
Our wildlife are dying of thirst.
In this green and pleasant land.
Weather and conditions have changed, and we need to change too, and help out those less fortunate than ourselves.
It's such a small effort, for such a huge reward.โค๏ธโ๐ฉน

I love these beach bins out in the undeveloped rocky coast of Fuerteventura. Often here on the rocky coves is marine plastic, large pieces like broken floats trays bits of boat as well as plastic bottles etc. Really useful beach cleaning check it out playapallet.com

Ever hear of Laona, Wisconsin? ๐ค
A few weeks ago, my Mermaid and I hopped in the Rat River and found a LOT of stuff in very shallow water! We didnโt even have to use our air tanks! We collected a bunch of fully intact bottles in the beginning and we think thatโs because it was near a bar and road. Why the car horn was in thereโฆ not really sure! ๐
I had my gloves in the kayak and shouldโve been wearing them the whole cleanup. I KNOW! ๐ฌ There was broken glass everywhere, but we were able to remove a lot of it without an incident. ๐๐
A huge THANKS to a few local ladies and Jakeโs House of Confusion for helping us dispose of all the litter we removed from the river! TEAMWORK!! ๐ค๐ค
It was great to visit Laona, WI! We love cleaning up waterways, we love each other and we love picking on each other in the process. ๐ฅฐ Thanks for watching and supporting our work! ๐คฟโค๏ธ๐งโโ๏ธ๐ซง โ at Wisconsin, USA

It's October, and despite the temperatures dropping a little, our wildlife is still suffering the effects of the drought, especially in the south of the country.
It really isn't normal to see an owl using a bird bath.
But with all the ponds, streams and rivers dried up, they are desperate.
You can see how incredibly nervous this poor owl is.
But birds need to bathe to keep their feathers in a safe condition, and that goes for our nocturnal birds too.
I've never seen such a variety of animals visit my little watering station.
The situation is dire.
So please remember to keep water out, front and back, at ground level, refreshed each evening with clean tap water.
Until we are blessed with some sustained rainfall, we are making the difference between life and death for so many creatures.

๐ฆ๐ Rescued in the nick of time... This poor hedgehog had a plastic ring tightly stuck around his middle - most likely caught around him when he was a tiny hoglet, gradually becoming tighter as he grew.
Itโs difficult to imagine how long he had been suffering. Now, finally free.

After searching for 1 1/2 hours, calling the dive off, but then trying just ONE MORE TIMEโฆ I FOUND DYLANโS RING! ๐คฉ๐ SWEET!!
This past Labor Day weekend, Dylan Setzer was putting his jet ski cover on and the elastic band forced his wedding band off his shrunken finger and into the water, near the end of his dock. ๐ฌ He was very upset and REALLY wanted it back, so he had two divers come search for it for almost 12 total (combined) hoursโฆ with no luck. ๐ข They used metal detectors, tried their best and searched high and low.
My Mermaid wasnโt able to join me today, as she was at home, preparing for a very special day tomorrow. ๐ฅฐ๐งโโ๏ธ
Dylan had me come out to the Wolf River in Shawano, WI today to search and I was able to meet his family and a neighbor too. Great folks! The metal plates at the bottom of the dock poles made it very difficult to pinpoint any other metal. I tried several times even and waved a bunch of sand away from them to search. After 1 1/2 hours of searching the rest of the area, finding & removing 2 rakes, 1 watch, a few washers & nails, 1 pair of sunglasses, 1 hammer and a few other itemsโฆ Dylan said โletโs call it!โ. ๐ข We talked for a few minutes about the disappointment while I was shivering in my gear, still in the water. I ended up telling him โOne more try!โ for good luck ๐ and wouldnโt ya know itโฆ I FOUND IT REALLY FAST! ๐ณ It was a few inches under the sand, but directly on TOP of one of the metal plates, so my metal detector couldnโt differentiate them apart. ๐ซค I waved a bunch of sand away and BOOM(!), THERE IT WAS! ๐๐
I recorded it all and canโt wait to show you the video, but WE WERE BOTH VERY EXCITED and he was VERY THANKFUL!! That wedding band meant a LOT to him and was made especially for him by a very talented jeweler, who has since passed.
It turned out, I was praying underwater during the search, while Dylan was praying above water. Our prayers were answered, but it took some patienceโฆ ๐โฐ
Thanks to Dylan for getting me out there and to all the kiddos who grabbed all the other random items out of my hands while searching the area. ๐ค๐ค
SUCCESSFUL RECOVERY!! ๐

Thanks to our Sponsor, NICOLET LAW, we are able to make a bigger difference across the Midwest, removing fishing line, lures, lead, metal, plastic, rubber and much more from our lakes and rivers!!
It all adds up and anyone can make a differenceโฆ even on shore. Healthy fishing habits help a bunch too, so if you keep getting snagged on somethingโฆ move to a DIFFERENT spot! ๐๐
