What better way to celebrate America’s 250th than by putting great books in schools and giving students a voice?
Through our Patriotic Good Book Drive and America’s 250th Art & Writing Competition, students across the country will read, write, create, and reflect on one powerful idea: freedom.
The top 250 student entries will be published in a commemorative book honoring America’s 250th birthday. 🇺🇸
This is about history, literacy, patriotism, and the next generation of Americans.
What does the science of learning tell us about teaching math?
@Randastovall1 and @SamanthaBrauns2 take a closer look at direct instruction, mathematical understanding, and the practices that help students build lasting knowledge.

Mathematics is more than a collection of rules and formulas.
Every mathematical idea has a history. It emerged from questions people were trying to answer and problems they were trying to solve.
When students understand that context, they can begin to see mathematics not simply as something handed to them in a textbook, but as a body of knowledge they can explore and contribute to.

What does it take to transform math instruction at scale? It takes more than good ideas. It takes a plan.
Freedom in Education and @ArkansasEd are joining forces to put the science of learning into practice, bringing research, instruction, and teacher support into sharper alignment.
Because with the right instruction, every student can succeed in math.
The best professional learning doesn’t stop at reading a book. It starts a conversation.
On October 29, @VinceBoley will host our next Educator’s Bookshelf discussion of All Things Being Equal, Part 2—and we’ll have the chance to continue that conversation directly with @johnmighton.
If you’re interested in mathematics education, student potential, and how we can better understand what students are capable of, join us.

When a student gets stuck in math, the question shouldn’t be: “I’m bad at math.”
It should be: “What is the broken link that needs to be fixed?”
Mastery of mathematics depends on understanding the connections between concepts—and having a solid foundation to build upon.

Great books can do more than entertain children.
They introduce children to language, ideas, history, imagination, and worlds beyond their own experience.
In the latest Founders Podcast, @0Beanie05923291 talks with Josh and Hannah Centers of @ChHouseBooks about why they’re curating high-quality collections of classic children’s literature—and why the books we put in children’s hands matter.

A school system cannot improve what it is unwilling to examine openly.
In the latest Founders Podcast, @0Beanie05923291 speaks with investigative journalist @chrispapst of Project Baltimore about transparency and accountability in Baltimore City Schools—and why these issues matter far beyond one school district.
When families and communities ask questions about how schools are performing, they deserve clear answers and honest information.

Math instruction matters.
Clear explanations. Explicit teaching. Guided practice. Building new knowledge on what students already know.
In the latest Carpool Talk, @Randastovall1 and @SamanthaBrauns2 discuss direct instruction and what effective math teaching looks like.

What happens when we expect more from students in mathematics?
That’s one of the questions at the heart of All Things Being Equal, Part 2, the book we’ll be discussing at the next Educator’s Bookshelf.
And this conversation will be especially meaningful: @johnmighton will be joining us as a special guest.
Hosted by @VinceBoley, the discussion will give educators a chance to dig into the ideas, ask questions, and consider what they mean for the classroom.

You can’t build advanced mathematics on a shaky foundation.
Place value. Number sense. Arithmetic. Fractions. Ratios and proportions. Prime factorization.
These foundational skills matter because mathematics is cumulative. When a student is struggling, sometimes the best place to look is not at the problem in front of them—but at what came before it.

In the age of AI, students can get an answer to a math problem in seconds.
But will they understand it? Will they care enough to ask why?
Teaching mathematics in context can help students see that math isn't just about completing problems. It is a body of knowledge built by people—and there are still problems waiting to be solved.

📖 What makes someone “good at math”?
Is it talent? Practice? Prior knowledge? The way mathematics is taught? Or are we asking the wrong question altogether?
That’s one of the questions we’ll explore in Part 2 of The Educator’s Bookshelf, featuring John Mighton’s All Things Being Equal.

What if the books children grow up with became part of the foundation of their education?
On the latest Founders Podcast, @0Beanie05923291 speaks with Josh and Hannah Centers, founders of @ChHouseBooks, about their mission to bring classic children’s literature back to the center of family life through beautifully curated hardcover box sets.

Your child can know exactly which math operation to use—and still get the problem wrong.
Why?
Because before they can solve the math, they have to understand the words.
For many students, the obstacle isn’t the math itself. It’s decoding, reading fluency, vocabulary, and making sense of what the problem is actually asking.
That’s why literacy matters in mathematics.

A library doesn’t always have to look like a library.
Books x Bodegas is bringing free books and mini-libraries into Bronx corner stores—putting reading within reach in the places families already visit every day.
This last September marks one year since Suzanne Likeness and Zoya Garcia launched the initiative.

Why do times tables matter so much? Because working memory can only do so much at once. A kid who has to stop and calculate 7×8 mid-problem has less brainpower left for the actual problem. Fluency isn't busywork — it clears the runway for harder thinking.

We talk a lot about how children struggle with math. But we should be talking just as much about how math is taught.
What does effective math instruction look like? Why does direct instruction matter? And what does the science of learning tell us?
@Randastovall1 and @SamanthaBrauns2 dig into these questions in the latest Carpool Talk.
