I've had so many people bring up the pinky-to-thumb or fist rule for placing their microphones. Just know that it's complete BS. Microphones find their placement for many different reasons. Some are meant to be farther away, while others are meant to be closer. It all depends on the kind of sound you're chasing and how well treated the room is. To an audio engineer, microphone placement might as well be an EQ and compression choice. You're placing it based on how it captures different parts of the voice. Do I want a less natural sound with more low end, more presence, and a more powerful tone? Put it right up in your face. Do I want it to sound more natural and like you're hearing someone in the real world? Back it up. It all comes down to the sound you're chasing. Start with the mic almost touching your face, then move it back in 1-inch freedom unit increments while recording. Listen to how it sounds at each distance and find what you think sounds best. It could end up being pinky-to-thumb, or it could be a foot away. The biggest factor in getting a good sound from farther away is room treatment, room placement, and how much reflective clutter is around the microphone. The amount of flat surfaces streamers have is crazy. Desks, multiple monitors, and a PC sitting right on the desk for some reason all create reflections that end up in the microphone along with your voice.
