“Igbos who will vote Obi in Lagos in 2027 will be double the 2023 number.” — Chekwas Okorie. He is right. 2023 was just the beginning. This time, nobody is staying home. If you are in Lagos and you have your PVC, this election is on you. Go and vote. Twice the turnout. Same result. Better Nigeria. If you live in Lagos and you have your PVC, this is your signal. Do not sit this one out.

When Alex Otti took over Abia State on May 29, 2023, many people said he would fail. They said Abia was too broken, too indebted, too damaged. Three years later, even his critics are asking: what is he using to do this? This is a man who came from the bank, not from the usual godfather system. A former Diamond Bank CEO who used private sector discipline to run a public state. No noise. No jamboree. Just results. He met a state where workers and pensioners were owed for years. Where Aba was drowning in dirt and flood. Where roads were a memory. And this is what he has done: 414 road projects completed, 864.12 km across all 17 LGAs, plus 82 more roads under construction — including Port Harcourt Road in Aba by Julius Berger, the 6-lane Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard in Umuahia, and Omenuko Bridge. Debt cut by over 70%, from N191.2 Billion inherited in 2023 to about N48.4 Billion by 2025, without borrowing recklessly. Salaries and pensions now paid on or before the 28th of every month. Over N40 Billion spent to clear salary and pension arrears, and gratuity payments of N61.8 Billion for retirees from 2001-2023 now started. Free and Compulsory Basic Education over 300,000 new pupils enrolled in public schools. 5,394 teachers recruited in 2025, another 4,075 in August 2026. 277 healthcare facilities retrofitted, 821 health workers recruited, over 270,000 residents now on Abia Health Insurance Scheme. Over 10,000 solar streetlights installed, Electric Buses now transporting over 386,000 passengers, IGR moved from N14.67 Billion in 2022 to N66.86 Billion in 2025. He abolished pensions for former governors and deputies, the first governor in Nigeria to do that. Abia today is no longer the laughing stock. It is now the reference point. The world is now sleeping in Abia, as his CPS said. The most interesting thing about Otti? He says he will not be a godfather. He says Abians will choose his successor. Whether you support him or not, one fact stands: Abia has shown that good governance is possible when leadership is intentional. We wish His Excellency good health, strength, and wisdom to finish what he started. May Abia continue to prosper, and may other governors in Igboland learn that serving the people is not magic, it is discipline.

World Poverty Day: Why Nigeria Should Have Declared Today a Public Holiday Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Sadly, Nigeria has become a symbol of the global poverty crisis. The rising poverty rate, from 40.1 per cent in 2019 to 56.2 per cent in 2023 and an estimated 63 per cent in 2026, shows how a country can move progressively backwards while those in authority appear unconcerned. Millions of Nigerians are now struggling to live, to afford food, and access healthcare. Yet, government narratives often paint a different picture. What meaning does economic growth have when citizens are getting poorer, hungrier, and more insecure? Progress must be measured by improvements in people’s lives. As poverty deepens, the government should genuinely show concern. Perhaps today should have been declared a public holiday, not for celebration, but for national reflection on how a country so richly endowed with human and natural resources has allowed poverty to overcome it. Poverty is not Nigeria’s destiny. With competent leadership, prudent management of public resources, investment in education and healthcare, and support for agriculture and small businesses, we can reverse this trend. A new Nigeria where no citizen goes to bed hungry and where every citizen lives in dignity is POssible and OK. -PO

One Month Discount on Petrol: From Reactive Policies to Flawed Outcomes! The announcement by the APC led Federal Government offering a 30-day discount on price of petrol to relieve the acute hardship and hunger caused Nigerians by its unplanned removal of subsidy can only be described as another very reactive and confused approach to governance that is now the culture of the Tinubu Government. I had delayed in reacting to the announcement just to give the benefit of doubt and watch the outcome of the policy. Now, having assessed the outcomes, the policy is a substitution of political optics for sound policy. As Nigerians will recall, President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023, most carelessly removed fuel subsidy without any consultation or proper assessment of the negative impacts of such policies on our economy particularly on the livelihood of ordinary Nigerians. Moreover, the careless removal of fuel subsidy was followed by other very badly sequenced policies such as the floating of the naira and tax reforms, all implemented in a very disorganized, incompetent and insensitive manner in addition to using three budgets at the same time with the attendant lack of transparency and accountability. Collectively, these policies stoked inflation in all sectors, pushing in most cases unbearable price hikes across board which placed severe shocks and other adverse consequences on Nigerians. Expectedly, the outcomes are what they are- increasing multi-dimensional poverty, skyrocketing costs of goods and services, shrinking opportunities, exit of many businesses, mounting unemployment, disturbing insecurity, widening inequality, forced migration of our youths and general decline in the well-being of Nigerians. Most unfortunately, rather than engage in detailed and published regulatory impact assessment of their reactive policies, the President Bola Tinubu’s led government has again demonstrated their well-known incompetence and insensitivity to governance. With a detailed and published regulatory impact assessment of policies, a competent government would have pursued robust and sincere engagements and consultations with key stakeholders and ordinary Nigerians to recraft and implement inclusive and sustainable socio-economic growth strategies and policies. What really does the President Bola Tinubu led government want to achieve with a one-month discount of less than 5% on fuel cost. Will it reduce poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and inequality? Will it increase productivity and exports? Is it a test to ascertain if subsidy should be restored? Is it another political gambit in the face of threats of electoral loss in the 2027 election? Too many questions, no answer!

Yesterday, on World Teachers’ Day in Umuahia, we reaffirmed our commitment to the welfare and dignity of our teachers by establishing a ₦1 billion Teachers’ Appreciation Fund. In addition, I also directed the settlement of outstanding check-off dues, salary arrears and promotions, and ensured the reinstatement of disengaged teachers who are below 65 years of age. Our administration remains committed to strengthening education through better support for teachers, creating opportunities for our children to excel. We will continue to invest in modern learning environments, including Smart Schools across the 17 Local Government Areas, while sustaining free and compulsory education. I commend our teachers for their dedication and sacrifices. As we celebrate their achievements, we congratulate our Abia public school students who represented Nigeria and won the 2026 International Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, while also applauding Abia State for retaining its first-place position as the best-performing state in the recently released 2025 NECO Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). These achievements are a reflection of what is possible when dedicated teachers are empowered and our children are given the opportunity to thrive, affirming that our investments in education are yielding results. When we invest in our teachers, we invest in a generation equipped to excel on every stage and take Abia to the world.

Some facts about St. Francis of Assisi you may find interesting: • He was born into wealth: Francis was born around 1181/1182 to a prosperous merchant family, but eventually renounced his wealth to embrace radical Gospel poverty. • He was not a priest: Francis was ordained a deacon, but never became a priest. He founded the Order of Friars Minor - the Franciscans. • He received the stigmata: In 1224, Francis received the wounds of Christ in a mystical experience on Mount La Verna, making him one of the earliest well-documented figures associated with the stigmata. • He preached to animals: Francis is famous for his love of creation, and several early sources recount stories of him preaching to birds and other creatures. His Canticle of the Creatures expresses this profound spirituality. • He met the Sultan: During the Fifth Crusade, Francis travelled to Egypt and met Sultan al-Malik al-Kamil. His courage in crossing enemy lines to speak with a Muslim ruler remains one of the most remarkable episodes of his life. • He helped popularize the Christmas Nativity scene: In 1223, at Greccio, Francis arranged a living representation of the Nativity to help people contemplate the mystery of Christ's birth. • He had a deep devotion to the Eucharist: Francis repeatedly urged his brothers to treat the Eucharist with profound reverence and called priests to recognize the extraordinary dignity of the ministry entrusted to them. • He died young: Francis died on October 3, 1226, at about 44 years of age, and was canonized less than two years later by Pope Gregory IX. • His influence continues to this day: His spirituality of poverty, simplicity, peace, fraternity, and care for creation has influenced generations of Christians and continues to inspire people far beyond the Franciscan family. St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us🙏
The sandals worn by Saint Francis still preserved and on display 800 years after his death. The sandals are a precious historical and spiritual relic, traditionally made by Saint Chiara of Assisi to alleviate the Saint's suffering after his stigmata. The sandals woven in moss and leather are kept in the Convent of San Flaviano (in the chapel of the Sanctorum) in Recanati, in the province of Macerata. Saint Francis walked barefoot for most of his life, but in recent years, due to the painful wounds on his feet and the difficulty of walking after his stay at the Verna (1224), Saint Chiara made these protective footwear for him. They were brought to Recanati in the 15th century by Pope Gregory XII.
