1/9 Interesting study. As noted in the IFLScience piece, macroevolution is not amenable to experimental manipulation, and hypotheses about events tens of millions of years ago necessarily rely on inference. That applies equally to our hypothesis and to Brownstein et al.'s.
Tuna are truly odd fish, growing to massive size and featuring warm blood. But what made them this way? iflscience.com/did-the-dinosโฆ

Our friend Francesca recently spotted this cool creature washed up on La Jolla Shores, so naturally we had to phone our other friend Ben @Frable, manager of the Marine Vertebrate Collection here at Scripps Oceanography. ๐ Here's what he had to say. โฌ๏ธ

"This is our most common deep-water eel, the dogface witch eel, Facciolella equatorialis. They occur around 300 to nearly 2,000 feet on the seafloor. I have been seeing them in greater numbers in the last few years." - @Frable

The New Zealand sole (Peltorhamphus novaezeelandiae) is host to many different species of parasites.
This study looked at the parasite fauna of this flatfish, and the role played by this sole in the transmission of those parasites.

The oarfish, a striking deep-sea creature nicknamed the โdoomsday fish,โ has eluded researchers over the decades. For scientists in California, where three oarfish have washed up in recent months, itโs an exciting find. nyti.ms/3CDppeZ
