People love to say if we canceled student debt, taxpayers would pay. It's actually the opposite. We're paying now. $350 million to just one company to collect money that isn't being paid back. 40% of grads are not paying their loans. Cancellation is CHEAPER.
Just to note how stupid this system is...we just learned that 15 days ago, the Dept of Education awarded a brief contract to consulting firm Accenture to oversee sending emails to student debtors.
It's a $350M contract.
So it costs more to *service* the debt than to cancel it.
Since he did a campaign event upstate last year with AOC, my money has been on Pat Ryan running in 2030.

AOC: We knew that the work couldn't be done and finished with just one person. So, we went back around down ballot and we changed and transformed and took on the entire Queen's machine and some of the Bronx machine. We ran young people, including an assemblyman by the name of Zohran Mamdani in 2020 and an assemblywoman by the name of Claire Valdez.
Working class people deserve to live their one wild and precious life! Republicans use student debt to starve communities of the services they need. They use student debt to prevent us from building wealth. Student debt is social control at its core.

There is an entire system designed to profit off of our debts. They have squeezed every penny they can out of us from health care, housing and education. Our incarceration, our food/groceries and our transportation. Now they want to profit off of our desperation. It's sick.

NYPD cops roughed up a civilian for *standing on the sidewalk* in a spot where NYPD Sgt. William McKnight (badge #: 3576) wanted to *illegally park his car.*
And NYPD leader Jessica Tisch & Deputy Chief Michael Baker say that *the civilian* is the one who acted "unlawfully"!

When people say debt cancellation will cost money, the real question is how much does not canceling it cost? 40% of new grads are NOT repaying their loans! We spend millions of dollars on loan servicers to get back $0. It would save $ to cancel it all.
