We urge you to always use correct and appropriate terminology when discussing about the 1994 events in Rwanda. The right terminology is the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda rather than Rwandan Genocide or any other similar phrases. Please find out more below. ⬇️
Today, Ishami Foundation honours Dafroza Mukarumongi Gauthier as we bid her farewell in Reims, France.
Together with her husband, Alain Gauthier, she dedicated her life to pursuing justice for the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
In our book, 100 Days, 100 Stories – Rwandan Voices on the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi (pp. 201–202), written by our very own Joy Ingabire, Dafroza shared the personal story behind her lifelong mission.
Reflecting on the suffering of genocide survivors, she said:
“Yes, you may have suffered. But at least, you did it as a family.”
Her words capture the profound loss endured by survivors and the importance of justice, truth and accountability.
Ishami Foundation will continue to honour Dafroza’s legacy by keeping her story and mission alive through storytelling, education and the preservation of survivors’ testimonies, inspiring future generations to stand for justice and resist impunity.
Rest in peace, Dafroza. Your courage and legacy will continue to inspire generations.

An important update in the pursuit of justice for the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi: the UK trial of Dr Vincent Brown/Bajinya, accused of genocide-related offences, is expected to take place in October 2027.
At Ishami Foundation, we remain committed to remembrance, truth and accountability, ensuring that the pursuit of justice continues and future generations learn from the past.

🕊️ International Day of Peace | 21 September
Peace is not an abstract idea to me. It is deeply personal—and it is deeply connected to Rwanda’s journey as a nation.
Having lived through the horrors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, I know the devastating cost of hatred, division and dehumanisation. But Rwanda’s journey has also shown us that even after unimaginable suffering, a nation can choose a different path: remembering, rebuilding, reconciling and working together towards a more peaceful future.
For me, peace is not about forgetting the past. It is about remembering it, learning from it, and ensuring that it is never repeated.
Our experience reminds us that peace cannot be taken for granted. It must be nurtured through education, dialogue, reconciliation, justice and a shared commitment to our common humanity.
Through football, education and storytelling, I remain committed to creating spaces where young people can learn from the past, respect one another and become ambassadors for peace.
Today, I invite you to ask yourself:
What can I do—today, in my own community—to make peace more visible, more possible and more lasting?
Maybe it is listening instead of judging.
Maybe it is reaching across a divide.
Maybe it is teaching a young person the value of respect.
Maybe it is simply choosing kindness when it would be easier to walk away.
Let’s not only celebrate peace today. Let’s practice it. Let’s teach it. Let’s protect it. And let’s give the next generation a world where peace is not just a dream, but a lived reality.
What will you do for peace today? Share it below—and inspire someone else to take one small step.

When trying to escape a dreadful @AFCWimbledon defeat you can a) turn off socials b) leaf through scrapbooks of the 80s and 90s or c) interview a guy who survived a genocide that killed 1m people in 100 days by being a footballer. Mad story. Listen in....youtu.be/nOd-TUBsTKQ

At Ishami Foundation, we believe that every story remembered is a step towards a more compassionate and peaceful future. We commend Inkuru Library for honouring these #Amavubi players whose lives were brutally cut short during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Preserving their legacy through football reminds us that sport is not only about competition—it is also a powerful vehicle for memory, education, healing, and our shared commitment to #NeverAgain.
As the world continues to celebrate the end of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Inkuru Library presents a collection of 8 photographs honoring 8 of the 9 former players of Rwanda’s National Football Team (𝐴𝑚𝑎𝑣𝑢𝑏𝑖) who were killed during the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi.
By preserving their memory in the hearts of football fans and within the halls of their national team’s home, this collection keeps their legacy alive as part of Rwanda’s football heritage and serves as a reminder that their dreams and aspirations were part of this beloved game.
Eternalizing their memory is a commitment to ensuring that such a tragedy never repeat again.

A meaningful continuation of remembrance through learning and dialogue. We are grateful to Tangen High School for standing with Rwanda by sharing stories of change with the Kristiansand community, and to Ambassador @DianeGashumba for engaging these young people with clarity and purpose.
At Ishami Foundation, we believe these exchanges help shape a generation that not only remembers, but understands its responsibility to protect truth, challenge hate, and build lasting peace. #Kwibuka32
During the period of the 32nd commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi, Ambassador @DianeGashumba visited Tangen High School for a “Day for Rwanda” session with students who had recently traveled to Rwanda facilitated by Ishami Foundation. The students shared reflections and insights from their February visit, highlighting their learning experiences and engagement on the ground.
In her remarks, the Ambassador spoke about the importance of responsible freedom of expression, drawing a clear distinction between freedom of speech and hate speech. She emphasized Rwanda’s perspective on safeguarding unity and reconciliation as fundamental pillars for sustainable peace.
The visit also included a session with the United Nations Association of Norway, focusing on critical reflections on the failure of the UN during the Genocide against the Tutsi. Discussions explored lessons learned from Rwanda’s experience, the evolving role of peacekeeping, and the responsibility to protect in the context of shifting global security and political dynamics.
A DAY FOR RWANDA 🇷🇼

Today, students who recently visited Rwanda share their experiences with their peers, parents, and community—turning learning into remembrance, and remembrance into responsibility.

As we mark #Kwibuka32, we honour memory by passing it forward.
