11. If you have brought lots of earloop masks and can't afford to buy proper headstrap respirators, you can always get a “mаsk brace” to improve the fit of KF94/KN95s (which are effectively the same as surgical mаsks on~90% of people). @FixTheMask

19/ If only surgical masks are available, they can be made A LOT safer w/ inexpensive brace like @FixTheMask (probably cheaper than the often mandated face shields that are probably wasting $$ in Philippines). Helps a lot in leak tests Can make your own: fixthemask.com/products/v2-d…

Omicron has heightened the need for a high filtration mask that fits tightly. W/surgical, there's often a gap. Reminds me of this Bay Area sisters' invention @FixTheMask that provides an effective fix! abc7news.com/fix-the-mask-se…

“Because surgical masks are available ubiquitously and widely used, sending fitters — which would be quick, easy and cheap to mass produce — with a package of three-ply surgical masks could happen urgently, allowing people to start wearing them now.”

It was a great article although you promoted surgical masks as superior airborne PPE despite the fact they dont offer respiratory protection at all & need a brace in order to be effective which you left out. Without a tight seal, the air bypasses the mask. cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/pdfs/Und…

I’m a happy user of @armbrust_usa masks…but only in combination with @FixTheMask’s brace, which I backed on Kickstarter in July 2020, because aerosol was obvious even then.
This is why you should wear an N95 (N100 more comfortable and protective) when you go to the doctor. And bring a @FixTheMask in case they make you swap to a surgical mask. xitter.cf/linseymarr/status/1450…
Whoa, this study showed that patients visiting their doctor after a flu patient are more likely to get the flu. Lingering virus in the exam room?

Backup tip. Buy a @FixTheMask for when the hospital requires you to swap out of your N95. Because these outbreaks go hand in hand with mind-boggling stupid IPC decisions. Correlation - not causation. Based on anecdata.
Here's an important health tip for when hospitals and emergency services get increasingly swamped: Don't become seriously ill.

COVID IS NOT SPREAD ON HANDS* Lungs have the surface area of tennis court & virus is inhaled in infected air Telling people to wash hands to prevent a respiratory pandemic is negligence *CDC: 1 in 10,000 risk from a touch, so possible but very unlikely

All that being said, it's still a great idea to take precautions! I wear an @armbrust_usa surgical mask (made of N95 material) + @FixTheMask mask brace, which gives me 97% to 99% FFE, plus a face shield primarily for some eye protection. And, stay outdoors + improve ventilation.

And would expect to find an even greater reduction with N95 masks or surgical masks w/ fitters such as @FixTheMask Sadly, while vaccines remain out of reach for the world’s most impoverished people, other pandemic tools like #BetterMasks are the only viable immediate option.
Replying to @Jabaluck
The reduction was larger in villages where we (randomly) used surgical masks than those where we used cloth masks; in surgical mask villages, we saw a 12% reduction in COVID overall and a 35% reduction among those aged 60+.

The cloth mask that may have kept you safe last year won’t this time around. Wear the best masks you can: N95, KF94, or KN95. If you can’t afford, consider surgical masks and a brace (like one from @FixTheMask). And, if you can, please help others access more protective masks.
I didn’t think I’d have to do this, but, here we are. Re-re-upping this thread from 11/2020 (updated!). In order from most to least protective: 1. NIOSH approved N95 2. KF94 / (Reliable) KN95 / Surgical Mask + Brace 3. Surgical mask + Fabric mask 4. Surgical mask 5. Fabric mask
