My favorite two cues with 7-18 year old hitters are:
1) Never be late on a FB.
2) No groundballs in BP.
The #1 move I talk to hitters the most about (and 1 good way to train it👇🏼)
They start on time but never actually get loaded to GO.
They think they’re ready. They’re not.
So they start earlier next time. Same problem.
——
This is a conversation I have with almost every hitter.
When is the right time for you?
- Based on your load style
- Based on how long your load takes
- Based on the pitcher’s velo, windup, or slide step
——
If that’s you, try a “loaded at release” type load. Bobby Witt. Judge.
Get your hip and elbow loaded early.
Then stride with it ready to fire.
“The pitcher is up there for 20 seconds telling you to get ready. Shame on you if you’re not ready to swing.”
____
If I have you in the cage, what I’ll do is have you get into a no stride position, get ready to swing and I stand there for 1-4 seconds… Holding my hand out over the plate ready to snap my fingers.
When I snap, you swing.
Do that 4-5x.
You get the quickness, readiness feeling.
Then we go back to stride with moving ball and you’re trying to time up that same GO move with the ball
With your foot up in the air and the GO will make the foot go down. Not foot down then swing. That typically kills quickness.
This works 95% of the time I’d say!
——
> Send this to a hitter who need better load timing
> And make sure you’re following, I help hitters hit better in game
Pitchers want to be great ro stop pitching.
Defenders want to be great to stop playing defense.
Hitters want to be great to keep hitting.
The two most-important offensive stats are RUNS & RBI. Everything else you think matters (AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS) is in service of scoring runs.

I honestly never fact checked this but had a friend ask me decades ago, “what leads to more big innings, a leadoff homer or a leadoff walk?” Naturally people guess the BB. It’s HR by a landslide.
Years ago, it was said that home runs were rally-kilers. I get the argument, but the Brewers' 2-run tank didn't stop the follow-up solo tank. Runs win games. Score runs.

My kid got a glove on it at 3B.

I believe my friend, @chadLworth would approve of 3 year-old me prioritizing barrel over mechanics.
Someone needs to hear this.

She's been All-Conference/District/Region and HM All-State at three positions in HS SB. I'm biased, but OBJCTIVELY. she's likely among your best options, regardless of position. Kid's SB IQ is off the charts.

I'm not Tewks or Joey or Marco or anyone other than me. I'm both smart & stupid, so I am able to take complex & make it simple & real for kids, because I need it simple & real. Watch to the end. You're welcome.
After my 17 y/o got injured in a collision on an infield fly, I instructed my 13 y/o's team to let every ball drop after they hear "infield fly" from the umpire. There's no benefit to catching it, and you might double-up a bad or poorly-coached baserunner.
It doesn't here, but it COULD also push him to the back of the bag, making the tag 15" longer.

Highlights at the plate from this past high school season. The preseason focus was consistent line drive power, and I was so happy to see that hard work come to life this spring!

I haven’t stepped foot in a tournament facility since October 2018.
Since then my youth baseball program has grown almost 10x in size. Parents, players and coaches are generally happier.
Only sharing this because it’s a reminder that you can serve kids unique, developmental baseball experiences and you absolutely DO NOT need these tournaments.
You just need to think outside the box about what kids truly need and then communicate the vision effectively.
