the internet is interesting.
this is like my fifth X account, honestly. i first got on here toward the end of high school to socialize, joke with friends and participate in whatever nonsense we had going on that day. eventually, i turned it into music promo. deleted it. came back. more music promo.
somewhere along the way, i learned how to have fun in the replies. i found little communities, got familiar with people through their posts and started appreciating how much personality lives in the margins of this place.
through all those versions, i’ve developed some small connections that mean something to me. familiar names, perspectives i look forward to, people who have taken a moment to listen or share something. there’s a real pleasure in finding your people on an internet this big. i have gratitude for that.
lately, i’ve been thinking about how we experience culture here. how a song, an image, a business, a phrase or somebody’s very specific way of seeing the world can catch our attention—and occasionally capture a whole moment.
sometimes you can feel something happening before you have the language for it. a shift in taste. a new attitude. people finding different ways to create, gather, express themselves and make a living. i’m interested in paying closer attention to those things, and to the people giving them form.
i have a hypothesis about what the internet is missing, and i’m going to take the liberty of pursuing it through First Wave.
i miss the pleasure of visiting a page because i trusted its taste. finding something i wouldn’t have searched for. reading a piece that helped me understand why something felt significant. following a link and coming back with a new interest.
First Wave is my attempt to contribute to that experience.
music will be part of it. so will style, enterprise, ideas, everyday ingenuity and the details that tell us something about the moment we’re living in. i want to follow what feels alive, give it some consideration and make interesting connections along the way.
so this account is transitioning into the First Wave desk.
the curiosity, humor and conversation that brought me here will shape how it develops. expect stories, observations, discoveries and things worth spending a little time with. i want the account to have a point of view you can get familiar with—and enough openness to keep surprising both of us.
i hope you engage. i hope you learn something, discover something, disagree with something and send something my way. mostly, i hope you enjoy watching this new interpretation of the account take shape.
thank you to everybody who’s been part of any version of it.
welcome to First Wave.

too much curation not enough discovery, fans are lazy listeners -- gatekeepers turned into executives -- the music biz has become the culture of hip hop
