It is with great joy that I watch the Firefox Platform Graphics team tear out the old Layers system in Nightly now that WebRender is on for everybody there.

After going through a few rounds of feedback, I have two new menu variants that I'll be testing. 1: "Save to" row (with labeled bookmark action) 2: "Save to" sub-menu (with two paths to bookmark) Feedback welcome here or on github.com/mozilla-mobile/fe… —V

I'll also be testing this grid menu concept. Pros: Compact, and the more spatially oriented design might be quicker to use after you get used to it. Cons: Less text-scannable, possible feeling of mystery meat icon overload.

Update! Sadly, I have no mockups to share at this time because us UX folks are working on long-term planning and designs which need more time to bake. Most of our engineers are currently bug fixing, but there are also improvements to the address bar in the works. —@violasong

We have enabled Warp, a significant update to SpiderMonkey, by default in @Firefox 83. 🕸️ SpiderMonkey is the JavaScript engine used in the Firefox web browser. 🌐 @jandemooij explains how Warp works and how it made SpiderMonkey faster. hacks.mozilla.org/2020/11/wa…

A small change in the works: 🔎 We can simplify the address bar by making the search engine logo a button for switching search engines. Feedback welcome! —V github.com/mozilla-mobile/fe…

Firefox handles YouTube better than Google's own browser on Android. It has a simple "Open in app" menu item to open a video in the native app. With Chrome, opening in native app is somewhere between complicated to impossible.

RE: Toolbar menu reading direction: @nactgl pointed out that the app's bottom-to-top menu animation causes him to read from bottom to top. For me, the animation is fast enough that I read top-to-bottom. Still, showing a static image for the survey may be misleading 🤔 —V

🏠 I've started working on the homescreen, which will be done in two phases as explained here. github.com/mozilla-mobile/fe… A question for folks who loved the old Android app: Was there anything *bad* about the tabbed homescreen approach? 🙂 I mean, could it have been improved? —V

Any survey I make will also be shared on Twitter/Reddit, with the results funneled into a special power-users bucket :). (With @firefoxdevtools, I used to only use Twitter/Reddit for surveys because the audience was representative enough)

🧪 For the Toolbar Menu task, I'm working with rad social scientist @RosanneScholl as well as data scientists. I need 2 types of data: • Telemetry stats for menu items sorted by most-accessed • Results from a mini survey which I'll launch via a research recruitment service
