Life changed rather unexpectedly for us at the start of the month. We welcomed our little girl, Fern Ellison, who arrived without much warning 3 months early. We are incredibly grateful for the amazing care that we have had from the neo-natal teams in Salisbury and Portsmouth.

Really love that Helen has raised this.
There is an evidence base behind the work of @ThisIsUniteFdn to show it is effective. Safe and stable homes make a world of difference.

Samantha Stewart has kicked off the #Housing2024 @HomesForAllEng panel discussion with a compelling message. As she says:
"Homes are not a commodity. Homes should be a place of comfort, of safety, of security. Not viewing our homes in this way is why we have got here."

Thirdly ( and oh yes I will probably get to ninthly) this obsession with earnings as a measure of quality and value is narrow minded and misses the many other benefits of going to university- to the individual and the country.

Care Experienced Experts @KerenLeary+Jamie Adams give a brilliant overview of the barriers to higher education 4 young people leaving care. Their recommendations include more flexibility in Aftercare Services, accommodation support for care-leavers that need it+clear signposting.

So pleased that @katharinejbrown is going to be taking the helm @ThisIsUniteFdn while I take some time off.
I've no doubt she'll be absolutely fabulous 💪
A big welcome to @katharinejbrown who is holding the fort for @Fiona_Ellison in 2024. Kate will be working with us, our Board of Trustees and sector leaders to continue to campaign for a free #HomeAtUniversity for all estranged and care experienced students 🏠🎓
Give blood.
Fern has already had 5 blood transfusions and they quite literally save lives.
Neonatal babies need special blood, and with only 2% of the population currently giving blood (recognising the challenges for the LGBTQ+ community)
They need more people to ensure they have enough safe blood for premature babies.
You can read more about the amazing need for neonatal blood here: bbc.com/news/health-68205015

This post makes me happy and sad. Happy that a young person has the support and space to make their voice heard, sad that the awful financial position of B'ham L.A. will mean that the very services that have supported Alice won't be available to other young people. #youthwork

Important from @NEONHE on low HE access for young people on free school meals. Widening participation is not reaching the most deprived - esp outside London.
Our programmes support young people who are ready now to buck that trend, while we campaign to change it for good.

💬 "We should be angry that we are letting down so many children. We all have a responsibility for them and in the very least give them a stable home. We all need to be saying this matters." - @KatharineSJ

Samantha Morton casts away the shadows of shame & claims the light! On receiving The @BAFTA Fellowship Award, after thanking her husband & children...
"I dedicate this award to every child who is in care today, or whose been in care, or is suffering or who didn't survive."
Sitting down and reading an actual paper... this in @guardian kept making me come back and read it... 1.8million households in the UK.
Just abhorrent that we can stand by and accept such destitution - we mustn't.
This shouldn't be where we are in 2024.
Really great to see @NUSUK launch their manifesto yesterday - we must ensure that education remains accessible to all.
This stood out for me on why affordable housing is so important "We’d spend more time learning – and less time thinking about what we can do just to survive."
LAUNCHING TODAY: the Manifesto for our Future – a manifesto written collaboratively with 10,000 students and apprentices to tell politicians exactly what we need to see from them in the next General Election.

That's why @ThisIsUniteFdn we believe that every care experienced & estranged young person deserves a #HomeAtUniversity - without the bank of Mum and Dad getting to, and staying at, university becomes a huge issue - we know care leavers are 38% more likely to drop out
