Far too much breathless debate around AI safety and alignment, let's do something realistic. Firstly, treat AI as a normal technology & not something magical. Then only implement measures that allow the normal laws to apply. The measures? An evidence rail.
When an AI system causes harm, who is ultimately liable? As artificial intelligence makes autonomous decisions, establishing accountability and legal traceability has become critical.

Joburg’s foundations are cracking after a decade of protracted financial stress and underinvestment in critical infrastructure. It’s a story that is being repeated endlessly in nearly every town across South Africa — and the situation appears to be getting worse.
Independent governance ratings agency Ratings Afrika’s latest annual municipal financial sustainability index (MFSI) report, based on the financial results of the 128 largest municipalities for the financial year ended June 2025, shows that the situation has continued to deteriorate “at an alarming rate”.

If you’re going to give industrial users electricity discounts on the basis of public and economic interest, the public should be able to scrutinise your figures, assumptions and calculations. Nersa insists these should all be kept secret.
@OpenSecretsZA
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa regularly approves huge discounts on electricity prices for South Africa’s largest industrial energy users. Yet it refuses to tell anyone about this.

PSG Financial Services chief economist Johann Els argues there’s room to hold rates, mainly due to the “almost complete absence of second-round effects from higher fuel costs, apart from the “direct impact on fuel and transport”.
South Africa’s inflation rate cooled to 4.3% in July, but economists remain divided over what the SARB should do next. While some see room to hold rates, others expect another hike as the SARB keeps its focus on the 3% inflation target.
