When the SR-71 feels threatened, it will perform a “deimatic display” in which it spreads out its frill, making it appear larger to its natural predators, such as the Air Force Budgetary Committee.

The reason this is so toxic is that people are often willing to forgive politicians who love their country, mean well, but get it wrong, even badly wrong. People who obviously hate their country do not have the benefit of the doubt; bad decisions seem deliberate.

A civilisation can be transformed once just 5% of its population adopts a new idea.
It starts with one lateral thinker. The linear majority rejects it with hostility. Other laterals adopt it quietly. Momentum builds.
At 5% there is a quantum shift. The new idea becomes reality almost overnight.
War and crisis force this process. The universe always wins.

Tax in the UK is the highest it’s been since 1945. That’s well understood – but another trend has been largely missed: the number of taxes in the UK is at its highest since the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
