Confidence is knowing you prepared. You did everything you needed to do for that moment. Whatever happens after that is just baseball. That’s why the routine matters more than the speech. After a mistake the conversation is simple: “Did you do everything you could to be prepared for that play?” If the answer is yes — stick to the routine. You’ll get the next one. Soon the player stops waiting for you to say it. He starts saying it to himself when the nerves show up, when he’s scared to fail, when he’s worried about letting a coach or teammate down. That is how he learns to handle the pressure that only gets heavier in middle school and high school. Build the routine early. The earlier he owns it, the quieter the noise gets.

This is why we ask the player “What did you do wrong?” instead of just giving the answer. When they have to figure it out, it sticks.
Cal Newport says that the only way to learn new things is using "active recall": "Replicating the information from scratch as if teaching a class without looking at your notes, that is the only way to learn." "It's efficient, doesn't take much time, but it's incredibly mentally taxing. This is why students often avoid it." "Not only do you learn very quickly, you don't forget. It's almost like you have a pseudo-photographic memory when you study this way." "Active recall is how you prepare, and it's going to take four hours and it's going to be tough, so do it in the morning when you have energy, and then you're done." "It's really hard, but it is the way to learn new things." @hubermanlab

🧵 Why the Offseason Matters Most players treat the offseason like a break. The best players treat it like an opportunity. The truth is — this is where real development happens. Here’s why 👇 (1/9)

Tuck was awesome!! From the day I first met him in Spring Training 2009, he always invited me over to big league camp to work with the MLB catchers. I learned so much from those experiences.
Enjoying @FedX19's book "The Modern Day Catcher." Also, I miss Gary Tuck.

One of the chapters I’m most passionate about in ‘The Modern Day Catcher’ is “Building Rapport with Pitchers”. It’s a commonly misperceived aspect of the catcher’s game. With many players transitioning to catching later in their careers, they often miss out on this essential part of the position. It’s not just about catching pitches; it’s about forging a deep understanding and trust with the pitcher. This rapport is the foundation of a successful battery, influencing game outcomes more than most realize. Every aspiring catcher should prioritize this relationship. The catching position has seen significant changes over the past 10 years. From technology to techniques, everything has evolved. I felt the need to provide a resource that captures this evolution and offers guidance for the next generation. #GivingBack #MLBJourney #Catching

I'm proud of how the boys played this season! It made my first year coaching in the big leagues a ton of fun. Throughout the year, as I dove into the catching position, I noticed a significant gap in resources for young catchers, especially regarding the evolution of the position in the last decade. There isn't much information that outlines what being a catcher entails. To address this, I'm thrilled to introduce "The Modern Day Catcher", a guide that captures the changes and offers insights for the next generation. #TheModernDayCatcher #Catching #Baseball Available on Amazon soon!
