FIFAFRICA 26 PRE-EVENT: RATIFYING THE MALABO CONVENTION Only 20 of 55 AU member states have ratified the #MalaboConvention, 12 years after its adoption and three years after it came into force. At our #FIFAfrica26 pre-event, MPs and civil society took on the usual objections. Sovereignty? Security exceptions remain. Cost? Most institutions already exist and need resourcing, not duplication. Strong national laws? Ratification adds cross-border reach. The session is focusing on: 🟧The role of Parliament in ratification and domestication. 🟧Strengthening parliamentary capacity on digital legislation. 🟧Balancing cybersecurity with privacy, freedom of expression and due process. 🟧Lessons from Kenya and other African countries 🟧How parliamentary networks can strengthen peer learning and cooperation. But independence needs money, not just a statute. Where Malabo falls short, as with protecting women online, national laws must fill the gap. That is Malabo Plus.
