Technology is advancing exponentially, hence we must be a part of how it is governed, shapes our daily lives, and seek ways to protect the rights of vulnerable groups in digital civic spaces. @Cc_HUB during the @AIRAfrica convening on the sideline of #FIFAfrica26 in Mauritius.

From commitment to enforcement: Reflections from #FIFAfrica26
What does it take to build a digital Africa that is not only connected and innovative, but also #open, #inclusive, #accountable and rights-respecting?
That question shaped @MzalendoWatch’s engagement at the Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa 2026 (#FIFAfrica26) held in Mauritius last week, where we joined parliamentarians, regulators, civil society, academia and digital governance practitioners from across the continent to interrogate what meaningful digital rights protection looks like in practice.

We opened with a roundtable on the African Union Convention on Cyber Security and Personal Data Protection (Malabo Convention), co-convened with @CIPESA and in collaboration with the African Parliamentary Network on Internet Governance (@apnigafrica).
The conversation went beyond the case for ratification. We explored what implementation should look like at country level and the role of Parliament, regulators and civil society in translating continental commitments into stronger, rights-respecting digital governance.

Across all three engagements, one message stood out - Rights on paper are not enough.
Africa needs a multiple-door approach to digital accountability; combining strong legislation, effective parliamentary #oversight, #independent and capable regulators, strategic litigation, meaningful #publicparticipation and sustained civil society scrutiny.
The task ahead is clear for all stakeholders, to move from ratification to implementation, from recognition to enforcement, and from consultation to meaningful participation. The ultimate goal is to make digital governance frameworks work for Africans.
A big thank you to the European Union through @oxfamkenya for making this possible.

Our National Coordinator, Uyanda Siyotula attended the Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (FIFAfrica) from the 30th – 1st of October in Mauritius. The forum aimed to bring different stakeholders from across the internet governance and digital rights arenas in Africa and beyond to deliberate on gaps, concerns and opportunities for advancing privacy, free expression, inclusion, the free flow of information, civic participation and innovation online. The SOS Coalition was honoured to be part of these important discussions.

Four days of debate, collaboration and hard questions on the future of digital rights in Africa. This year we also launched the State of Internet Freedom in Africa 2026 report, which tracks how digital ID, payment and data systems are reshaping rights and democratic participation across 11 African countries. The verdict: the infrastructure is moving faster than the safeguards.

At the #FIFAfrica26 closing, Mauritius ICT Minister Dr. Avinash Ramtohul recalled the 1 Nov 2024 internet restrictions: "As a government, we made a promise to ourselves that this should never, ever occur again."
He called for internet access to be considered for constitutional protection, and for Africa to speak with one voice: "With 1.3 million people in Mauritius, how do our voices get heard? We talk about more than 1.4 billion people. And this is where our voice lies."
He also added, "Freedom of internet, I fully support, but we also need to have guardrails." #InternetFreedomAfrica
