Starting to see some real hedging in SPX Dec 31 SPX puts: customers went from flat to long ~32.7k by Friday's close, and added again this morning. About $230M of premium, 6 to 7% below the index. ..all the action happening in the final trading day of the year (thread)

VIX November call volume looked absurd today. someone asked what on earth was going on in those strikes- so here's what traded, who was on each side, and what the Nov position looks like now that the day is done. (thread)

SPX has just ended a 21 day streak without a +1% day, while not booking a single -1% day during the entire run. This is only the 4th time in the past 10 years it had gone at least that long between +1% days without a -1% day. And how did it do going forw-OH MY GOD.
If you're a bear who just fucking loves n=3 studies with no statistical significance but a sea of red numbers in every column... You're rooting hard for SPX to have a +1.00% day today so I can post this thing after the close.

CBOE: "Despite the large equity rally last week, demand for optionality actually increased, with $SPX fixed strike vols rising meaningfully, helping to explain why the decline in the $VIX Index was much smaller than expected ( -1.1 pts vs. -2.8 pts expected given SPX Index +3.5%). SPX skew (25-delta ratio) collapsed to a 1-year low across tenors (1M through 1Y) as investors sold out of hedges and rotated into upside calls to chase the rally. SPX 1M skew fell to its lowest levels since mid-2024. Interestingly, deep OTM puts still saw a bid, with SPX 1M put convexity (10-delta vs. 25-delta put ratio) remaining in the 66th percentile high over the past 5 years. Among the major US indices, the Russell 2000 Index saw the biggest decline in volatility last week, with $RTY 1M implied vol down 1.8 pts to 16.9% (2nd percentile low). The RTY-SPX 1M implied volatility spread narrowed to a new 1-year low of 4% as small caps continued its steady upward climb (now +22% YTD vs. SPX Index +13%). Term structure steepened across the board, with SPX 1Y-1M vol spread widening from 5.4% to 5.9% (86th percentile high)."
Might be one of the craziest squeezes that I've seen in a long time. Welcome back to $SPX up + vol up. Fixed strike vol is bid by 1.2pts. $VIX and VIX futures are both green. Take a look at short dated 5 delta calls (+5pts) and the drop in skew. We typically see vol stuff like this after massive sell offs, and I wouldn't call a ~300pt drawdown "massive." Remember friends, upside vol is still vol!

#ES_F Recap
$ES Daily Plan | July 28 📌 Today’s session saw responsive sellers step in within last week’s gap area, retracing the overnight gains. In the process, value was established largely unchanged relative to Thursday’s and Friday’s sessions. Acceptance of lower prices suggests that this remains a bearish consolidation until proven otherwise, within the context of Thursday’s true gap down, which remains unfilled (7525.25). Intraday strength would be indicated by a reclaim of 7485 (UT1), while weakness would be signaled by a break and hold below today’s VAL at 7425 (DT1). Smashlevel: 7458

$ES Recap
$ES Daily Plan | July 27 📌 The auction has established a 2-day balance, which is now of short-term interest. The key question is whether sellers can continue to accept lower prices following Thursday’s gap lower and maintain downside pressure. Intraday strength would be indicated by a reclaim of 7485 (UT1), while weakness would be signaled by a break and hold below 7426 (DT1), Thursday’s VAL, where notable aggressive selling activity was absorbed. $SMH - Five top-100s in one day for this ticker. Not sure I can remember them doing that before. The first two present as sells, but then the tone changes near the low, or so it would seem. This will all be clear(er) come Monday. Enjoy the weekend. volumeleaders.com/register
$SMH - Heavy hitters at $570.17 and $567.74.
