.@CMFrumin you urged people to use unbiased research on “tax flight.” Have you considered this research? And what do you make of it?

DC’s own Tax Revision Commission analyzed tax filing data for the 2022 tax year and found that high-income residents didn’t leave DC in response to the 2021 income tax increase.
🚨🚨 Once again, anti-tax advocates are fear-mongering about “tax flight,” a myth that has survived on cherry-picked anecdotes despite mountains of research that disproves it. dcfpi.org/all/state-tax-leve…

There's been a really interesting theme that's come up: Some lawmakers talking about how big investments (and the taxes that sustain them) have created things that make D.C. more attractive to more people, and by expanding those investments even more people will come and stay.

Today's revenue hearing at @councilofdc was limited to invited "tax experts", but whether we have new revenue deeply affects the education budget and many other sectors. Katharine Landfield, senior advocacy strategist for @FairBudgetDC, said this hearing should not have been invite-only. She supports the wealth proceeds tax strongly, BAT, pied-à-terre.

CM @charlesallen: “We will need to increase revenue in the District, and we will also need to find savings to control spending."
The 1% sales tax increase, he said, gives him pause. (This is a thing that is already set to happen.)

CM @trayonwhite: “The problem can not be solved by cutting the basic safety lines keeping families here who are the most vulnerable," he said.
He added that they can’t balance the budget on the backs of poor and working class people.

Note: The room is PACKED — as in, we’re running short on seats — for this hearing about revenue and tax proposals.

Good grief. These tenants say they are living in filth in a badly functioning building and the lawyer for the developer tries to take over their protest? Stunning.
Lawmakers can use this moment to advance a more progressive and racially-just tax system by evaluating tax proposals across five dimensions. Learn more about these principles in our new blog!

"By many accounts, Navy Yard is among the most gentrified neighborhoods in the most gentrified city in America," Dr. Kevin Beckford writes in a new opinion piece.
In 2000, the neighborhood was 95% Black. By 2018, it had shifted to 24% Black and 68% white. 51st.news/dc-washington-curf…
Policing in Navy Yard is already out of control, argues Dr. Kevin Beckford — a youth advocate and researcher who lives in the neighborhood.
Criminalization is likely to only make things worse, he writes in an opinion piece for The 51st. 51st.news/dc-washington-curf…

BIG: @ChmnMendelson has scheduled a D.C. Council hearing on Oct. 16 to debate possible tax changes and increases. It will include everything from capital gains tax hikes and a new pied-a-terre tax (like NYC) to a business activity tax, and more.
Approximately 1,200 DC residents could lose food assistance by October because of a harmful time limit on SNAP that federal lawmakers imposed on states and enrollees last year.

Interesting: @MayorBowser's beef with the D.C. Council over the 2027 budget continues. She's allowing the Budget Support Act, the package of legislative and policy changes that accompanies the budget, to become law without her signature. She did the same with the budget itself.
