This is what community looks like: neighbors helping neighbors. When hardship comes our way, we meet it the way Hoosiers always have: together, with compassion, resilience and an unwavering commitment to leave no neighbor behind.

Iโ€™ve also spent a few hours volunteering alongside neighbors at Hohlt Park in the Town of Rocky Ripple & visiting the emergency shelter at the former Northview Middle School serving residents impacted by flooding in the Crystal Lake and Ravenswood neighborhoods.

FLOOD UPDATE: Residents in ROCKY RIPPLE and RAVENSWOOD are strongly advised to evacuate. The 53rd street gate in ROCKY RIPPLE is being closely monitored. Should a closure of this gate be required, vehiclesโ€”including emergency vehiclesโ€”will not be able to access the area.

As inspiring as today was, it also served as a reminder that in the wealthiest nation on Earth, no one should have to wait in a food pantry line to feed their family.

Every generation is called to carry this work forward & our generation is no different. Weโ€™ll reject hate without becoming hateful/reject fear without becoming fearful. Weโ€™ll stand together, organize & vote because loving America means fighting for an America that includes all.

It challenged a corrupt political system that treated some Americans as second-class citizens.

The Civil Rights Movement didnโ€™t defeat the ideology of hate with fear. It defeated it by organizing. It helped secure the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, and inspired an era that expanded opportunity and dignity for millions of Americans.

Thatโ€™s the Indiana weโ€™re building: one where every person is treated with dignity, every faith is respected, and every neighbor belongs.

Today, we know better, and we wonโ€™t be intimidated into repeating it. Hoosiers deserve leaders focused on lowering costs, improving schools, expanding opportunity, and protecting our democracy, not manufacturing fear to distract from the issues families face every day.

D.C. Stephenson didnโ€™t build his movement overnight. It grew by convincing people to fear their neighbors, blame immigrants and religious minorities, and wrap hatred in the language of patriotism, faith, and โ€œfamily values.โ€ History rejected them.

Letting Hoosier Children Go Hungry Is Not a Family Value. Statehouse Republicans committed Indiana to taxpayer-funded tax breaks for billion-dollar corporations for up to 50 YEARS, but they wonโ€™t commit to feeding Hoosier children for ONE SUMMER.
