On October 7, MEPs adopted a recommendation rejecting Beijing's distortion of UN Resolution 2758, the 1971 vote that only transferred China's UN seat and never mentioned Taiwan. The text explicitly states the EU has never endorsed China's "One China principle," the position that treats Taiwan as already part of the PRC. It goes further than statements of principle. It calls for a continuous naval presence and joint exercises in the Taiwan Strait with regional partners. It pushes the European Commission to start preparing a bilateral investment agreement with Taiwan, prioritizing semiconductors and critical supply chains. It also demands the UN stop blocking Taiwanese passport holders, including tourists, journalists, and NGO workers, from accessing UN events. This builds on earlier Parliament resolutions in 2021, 2022, and 2024. The margin and the concrete asks, naval cooperation and an investment agreement, make this one stand out. One catch: this is a political recommendation, not binding EU policy. The European Council and Commission still set actual foreign policy, and the EU's official "One China policy" remains unchanged. Taiwan's foreign ministry thanked the Parliament. China has pushed back, with its Taiwan Affairs Office and state media criticizing the text as interference that challenges the One China principle.
