When a state arrests an opposition leader inside a UN compound, democracy isn't backsliding… it's buried. Zambia just buried it. And the region's silence is complicity. My full op-ed, inspired by @daddyhope's unflinching observation. No euphemisms. Just truth. african360news.com/un-zambia… #Zambia #Elections #SouthernAfrica #Democracy #SADC #UN

This is the moment Zambia’s opposition leader, Brian Mundubile, who has accused Zambian strongman Hakainde Hichilema of rigging the 13 August presidential election, was arrested by police alongside fellow opposition figure Makebi Zulu. On Monday, Hichilema shut down the courts, preventing Mundubile from physically filing a petition challenging the disputed election result. His regime also killed a former Cabinet minister last week, just hours after the opposition protested the suspension of vote counting and the announcement of results. Mundubile subsequently sought refuge at the United Nations compound in Lusaka, where he remained until his arrest today. Hichilema told his rival to take his grievances to court, then shut down the courts, deployed soldiers to block access and arrested him. This is not democracy, it is authoritarianism. This leaves South Africa, Botswana Lesotho, Malawi and Namibia as the only remaining democracies in mainland Southern Africa where elections are conducted freely and fairly and the will of the people is respected, and those aggrieved have access to courts.

Zambia’s government under President Hakainde Hichilema has reportedly arrested and detained opposition leader Brian Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu. The two are reportedly facing an alleged treason charge, raising serious concerns about the treatment of political opponents and the shrinking space for political dissent in Zambia and Africa. Opposition is not treason. #ThisisAfrica

Dear President @HHichilema, Please clarify the reports that we are now offering state funerals to members of millitia groups in Zambia. Should current and or future members of insurgents, rebel and or millitia groups look forward to state funerals upon their eventual demise? Is this now government policy? Thank You Sir

Zambian government of President Hakainde #Hichilema has now arrested and detained his main political rival and opposition leader, Brian #Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, as authorities intend to charge them with an “alleged ‌offence of treason.” Police, who grilled them for the entire day, have not publicly detailed the conduct they allege constitutes treason, nor have they disclosed what evidence prompted the investigation. Mundubile failed to file a presidential election petition challenging President Hichilema’s victory following the state’s unprecedented order to shut down courts across the country for “security reasons.” The courts are now fully operational. Mundubile, who has been living under diplomatic sanctuary, challenged President Hichilema in the just-concluded presidential election. Hichilema has since been declared the winner and will be sworn in Tuesday next week. Treason charges are frequently a focal point of political friction in Zambia, often brought up against high-profile opposition leaders. Prior to becoming President, Hichilema was detained and charged with treason following a political standoff involving his failure to yield to President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade. At the time, he was the leader of Zambia’s main opposition, challenging President Lungu. He spent more than 100 days in a high-security prison while awaiting trial. It took the intervention of Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, who traveled to Zambia to meet Lungu and Hichilema, for the state to drop all treason charges. Three years later, Hichilema won the 2021 presidential election and became the President of Zambia.

Interesting. In many ways this exchange illustrates the tension between external observations of poverty & what those who experience poverty say it is, but even more how spatial difference is graded as less or more. BUT Poverty is suffering involving ontological insecurity.
Not true. It’s actually harder due to absence of agglomeration effects.

And it's also much much easier for national leadership to make the life of that rural person 100% better than it is for him to do the same for an urban person. And so.. when a leader focuses on the rural and gets their vote.. all election priors are off, as we just saw in Zambia and will probably see in Kenya next year.

What’s the context? What does “better off” mean here? What are the variables of comparison?
A poor person in a rural area is 3 x better off than a poor person in a slum.

Zambian authorities suddenly closed and cordoned off the courts without credible explanation on August 24, effectively blocking the filing of any legal challenges to the results of the August 13 presidential election  trib.al/c86uiRZ

2 days ago, Zambian President deployed the army to close all High Courts in Zambia in order to prevent the opposition leader from filling a petition. Now after the deadline for petition is over, the courts have been ordered to reopen becausw the security threats are apparently over

Zambians, listen! Over the years, I have learned to respect the power of time. Time has a way of revealing what people try to hide. These days, when something happens, I don’t panic. I simply wait. With time, the truth has a way of finding its way to the surface. People can lie, scheme, plot evil, and believe they have gotten away with it. But time exposes motives, reveals hidden hands, and uncovers what was meant to remain in the dark. Sometimes, the best response is simply to wait and let time do its work.

What we need to make Zambia a true democracy: • An Independent Electoral Commission • Freedom of speech • Press freedom • End to the Public Order Act • Impartial police • Criminalize rigging #WeWillFixIt
