This is a horrible bill that seeks to make it easier to convert public schools to a charter school and give away the land and building to the charter. These are public lands, and once we lose them, we won’t get them back.
As state legislative sessions start up, keep an eye out for bills like this: flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/20… Bills (in states with county school systems) to allow municipalities within counties to take over schools in their space & convert to charters are all about re-segregation!!!

This is exactly the issue we face in the #Florida Keys. The "marketplace" will never provide a wide range of high quality education options here, such options are economically unfeasible, but continuing to divert funding away from public schools will impact their quality.

I'm not the only one who thinks that wiping rural communities off the map because of *school choice* is a crazy idea. Here's James Lindsay (THAT James Lindsay) making the same point.

Hernando School Board Chair only wants book banners on book review committee. She wants to get rid of “Any human being, any adult that’s sitting on that board that says, ‘Leave it on the shelf,’ that’s the people I’m having a problem with.” #Florida suncoastnews.com/news/hernan…

Florida is spending millions on a statewide public database of school district library books and instructional materials, allowing users to easily file objections.
Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration says it's a transparency tool.
Free expression groups don't see it that way: "With book bans running amuck in Florida, this partnership seems to open the door wider to facilitate greater suppression of library materials and classroom content."

Right, districts have spent tons of $$$ creating their databases in compliance with these statutes and now, apparently, will have to transfer all the work to this new statewide system. The goal sappears to be: 1. Waste district time. 2. Waste taxpayer dollars. #3. Ban more books

1. A teacher in Ohio who has worked at the same public school for 34 years was suspended without pay and threatened with termination for offering four books in her classroom library that contained LGBTQ characters.
She's fighting back.

This is very concerning, especially considering #Florida parents can individually opt their child out of sex education… this appears to be the FLDOE opting hundreds of thousands of children out of any opportunity for sex ed in their schools. motherjones.com/politics/202…

1. I obtained the new middle school sex education curriculum that was just approved by the Florida Department of Education.
It excludes almost all information about sex.

Elected leaders overriding committee decisions (which often include PARENTS) is not about “parental rights” - it’s about political control. 👎🏻
On Dec 10, The House on Mango Street will go before the Hernando School Board whose Chair has promised to remove all the challenged books regardless of a committee decision to retain (which is exactly what the committee voted to do with this book).

Florida is #1 in book censorship and #47 in SAT scores.
What a pathetic combo.
The rampant censorship is the result of intentionally vague law-writing, coupled with threats for teachers & local officials who don’t censor enough books.
It’s chaos by design.

“This movement to protect the innocence of our children believes if children never read it in a book they won’t have to know about it and can go on to lead harmonious lives. But books teach us cautionary tales. They instruct us. You can’t protect innocence through ignorance.”
