For over a week now, I have struggled to find the words. It has been crushing to see yet another Black man killed before my eyes. As we all try to make sense of the senseless, we at the Fair Housing Partnership wish to convey one message. We see you; we hear you; we are you.
We mark the end of October recognizing it as Domestic Violence Awareness Month by announcing a “Save The Date” for April 28 and 29, 2023!
We are holding a fair housing summit centered on fair housing and domestic violence as well as affirmatively furthering fair housing.
We thank our partners @PghChr @urapgh and @HACP1 for coming together to further fair housing within @Pittsburgh. We are stronger together.

A disabled resident of the Dallas Housing Authority is receiving $500,000 due to a #FairHousing settlement negotiated by @FHEO_HQ.
The resident’s limited mobility forced her to crawl on the stairs to access her 2nd floor apartment when she was not transferred to the 1st floor.
“Public housing agencies are not exempt from fair housing laws. HUD is pleased the parties were able to resolve the matter and expects others with disabilities to be afforded reasonable accommodations as well,” said Demetria L. McCain, HUD’s Principal Deputy Secretary for #FHEO.
Updates to DHA’s reasonable accommodation policy will include prohibiting required medical verification when the individual’s disability-related need is known or obvious. #FairHousingDisability

Nathan Dykgraaf, the owner and manager of an RV park in #FL, and @FHEO_HQ have reached a settlement that includes a $45,000 payment to address the acts of housing discrimination that forced a transgender woman from her home. #FairHousingLGBT
Previously, HUD had issued a Charge of Discrimination based on sex that included Dykgraaf’s letter that had instructed the Complainant to act, talk, and dress as a man to avoid trouble. #FairHousing
“Housing providers have no place restricting a transgender resident’s expression of their gender identity,” said Demetria L McCain, @HUDgov Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity.

On average US cities are 56.6% white and rural areas are 83.5% white.
@Pittsburgh #PA is 84.9% white and is by far the largest US metro that is the least diverse.
Comparably, the Philadelphia metro is 61% white.

Added deposits and fees can’t be charged for minor aged children.

Alex Raimos, a #LongIsland #NY landlord, is charged with housing discrimination by @HUDgov for refusing to rent to a mother and her daughter who has cerebral palsy and ordered to pay $70,641 in damages and a civil penalty. #FairHousing
Raimos accepted their security deposit and set a move-in date for December 15, 2017.
Upon learning of the daughter’s disability, Raimos then refused to rent to the mother and daughter resulting in their emergency move into a 1-bedroom unit with a family member.
The $70,641 breaks down as $15,000 for a lost housing opportunity, $5,530 for economic losses, and $30,000 for emotional distress as well as a $20,111 civil penalty. #FairHousingEnforced

Nathan Dykgraaf, owner and manager of 21 Palms RV Resort Park in #Davenport #FL is charged by @FHEO_HQ with discriminating against woman who is transgender based on her gender identity.
After the tenant began living publicly as a woman, Mr. Dykgraaf wrote her a letter stating:
“To avoid problems you must: 1. Act as a man 2. Talk as a man 3. Dress as a man 4. Avoid tight clothing that is revealing sexual organs. If you follow the above steps trouble will be avoided.”
Subsequently the tenant fled their unit to express her #GenderIdentity safely.
“No one should have to change how they express their gender identity to maintain their housing,” said Demetria McCain, PDAS of HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity.
The @HUDgov charge will move forward to a hearing.
